WEST COAST TIMBER

NO MARKET IN DUNEDIN. Of interest to the 'sawmilling industry on the West Coast is the following notice, published in last Thursday’s Gazette by the Timber Controller, under the Supply Control Emergency Regulation, 1939, and the Timber Emergency Regulations, 1939:—

(1) No person, proprietor, or owner shall sell, transfer, or otherwise dispose of any timber materials being the product of the Westland, Grey, and Inangahua Counties to any person, proprietor, or owner in, or ordinarily resident in, the Southland Land District and that portion of Otago Land District, excluding the area within Waitaki and Waihemo Counties, save with the precedent consent of the Timber Controller.

(2) No person, proprietor or owner shall sell, transfer, or otherwise dispose of any timber materials being the product of the Westland, Grey and Inangahua Counties if he has reason to believe that the said' timber materials are being acquired by any person, proprietor, or owner so that they can be sold, transferred, or otherwise disposed of in the Southland Land District and that portion of Otago Land District, excluding the area within Waitaki and Waihemo Counties, save with the precedent consent of the Timber Controller. (3) The Timber Controller in his absolute discretion may refuse to give consent pursuant to clauses (1) and (2) above, or may grant such consent wholly or partly and either unconditionally upon or subject to such conditions as he thinks fit. (4) The notice issued by the Controller on the 26th day of October, 1939, with respect to the timber requirements of Timaru and points south thereof being obtained from Southland mills, is hereby revoked. (5) This notice shall come into force on the day following its publication in the Gazette. Questioned to-day, a sawmiller explained that the Controller’s action was due to the fact that there was a shortage of orders at the Southland mills, probably because customers preferred West Coast timber. The Dunedin market was mainly affected by the notice, and this market was now reserved for the Southland millers.
