INANGAHUA

COUNTY COUNCIL. MEETING [our own correspondent,] REEFTON, November 28. The monthly meeting of the Inangahua County Council was held today. Present: Crs. J. McGregor, J. F. Seawright, T. Watson, B. Mirfin, P. O’Regan, W. Hempseed, W. Blackadder, W. Clayton. Cr. McGregor was voted to the chair. / Secretary, .Reefton Amateur Swimming Club, wrote asking for usual grant towards caretaker’s salary.— Grant of £l3 made. Reefton Businessmen’s Association wrote .regarding Festivity Week and asking’ for co-operation of Council. — Cr. P.-iO’Regan moved, Cr. Clayton seconded that the Association be granted use of lorry, and that coloured lights be erected. T. Roberts wrote asking permislsion to take a wire, for lighting purposes across O’Grady’s Road. —Granted. > • D;' M. Carson wrote regarding improvements effected on his land at Maruia. Cr. Blackadder moved and Cr. Clayton seconded that a copy of th'e letter be sent to the Minister of Public Works, and that representations be again made on the matter of improved road access.—Carried. The Postmaster-General wrote on the matter of telephone at Spring’s Junction.—Left to the Clerk for reply. Minister of Agriculture wrote regarding lime supplies in the Maruia district. Cr. Blackadder moved and Cr. Clayton seconded that the National Service Department be asked if they would assist the Council in this matter. —Carried. Several ratepayers wrote asking attention to Brennan and Caples streets.—Engineer to attend to same. I. Patterson and Son wrote regarding Snowy River Gold Dredging Co., Ltd, and proposed dredging operations.—lt was resolved that the company be asked to furnish a plan of their area.

A. W. Hardie wrote aplying for sewerage connection at his dwelling, Munson Street.—Engineer to report.

The Acting Registrar, Social Security Department, wrote regarding reading at Maruia Springs Hostel, and attaching conditions to offer of subsidy.—Consideration held over. H. A. Lockington wrote regarding purchase of sections 660, 661, 662, 689, 690, and 691, Reefton. —The Clerk to draw up an agreement for sale and purchase of the sections. A. Palmer, traffic inspector, wrote regarding uniform allowance. —Cr Blackadder moved that .the Council increase the allowance to £4/2/6 per year. Seconded by Cr. Mirfin and carried.

Cr. Seawright moved and the Chairman seconded, that if additional scheme 13 men are available, they be placed on Boatman’s Short Track for widening same.—Carried. It was resolved that no action be taken in the matter of Anderson’s Road. The chairman made reference to the death of Mrs. M. Wells, wife of Mr. Allen Wells. He moved that the sympathy of the Council be forwarded to the family of the late Mrs. Wells. A motion of sympathy was passed by members standing.

The County Clerk wrote, conveying resolution passed at a public meeting held concerning the Home Guard. — Cr. Blackadder mover, Cr. Mirim seconded, that the Home Guard committee for Reefton consist of Councillors J. McGregor and J. Seawright, two R.S.A. representatives and a representative from the Businessmen’s Association, the Inangahua Farmers’ Union and the Inangahua Coal and Gold Miners’ Union.—Carried. Cr. W. Hempseed reported that a committee had been selected by Waiuta residents to organise the Home Guard there. The Council resolved that the committee for Waiuta be approved. I Cr. Watson moved and Cr. Seawright seconded that the Engineer make the best possible arrangements with the Highways Board for the tarsealing of the full width of Bridge Street at the Post Office from Broadway to the Court House corner.—Carried. The Engineer’s report and Traffic Inspectors’ reports were read and adopted. Cr.Seawright moved, and Cr. Hempseed seconded that the members of the riding of Antonio’s, and the Engineer, be empowered to deal with the reply from the Grey River Dredging Company regarding operations at Ikamatua, and that the Company be asked to reply to the Council’s representations at once. —Carried. Cr. Blackadder moved and Cr. Watson seconded that the Engineer attend to the surface of Nielsen’s road at Maruia. —Carried. Cr. P. O’Regan moved and the Chairman seconded that the Highways Board be asked tb cut the broom on Buller road from the school to the railway station. —-.Carried. Cr. Blackadder moved that the Council take steps to prevent the burning off of the hillsides around Reefton, and that the co-operation of the police .and of all residents be invited in the matter. —Carried. Cr. P. O’Regan moved and Cr. Watson seconded that the Director of Na- ( tional Service be written to on the matter of the calling in of all service rifles, and that if this is to be done that due consideration be given to the needs of farmers who are menaced with the depredations of deer on their crops.—Carried. ’/ Cr. Clayton brought forward the matter of the attendance of county members at the monthly patriotic meetings. Complaints had been made by some committee members that councillors did not attend the meeting and it had been asked if councillors could not attend meetings would they allow some one to be placed on the committee who would attend the meetings. Cr. Blackadder said he could not attend the meetings. The petrol shortage made it very difficult for him to travel. He would be glad to have some one go on the committee in his place. Cr. McGregor said he had no apologies to make in the matter. He attended all the meetings he was able to, and intended to point out this when he attended.

Cr. Seawright said his health did not permit him to go out at night but now the weather was improving he could probably attend. Cr. P. O’Regan said he had no apologies to make in the matter. He had not been able to obtain sufficient petrol to enable him to travel to Reefton to attend the meetings, but if this' Could be remedied he would be able to come to the monthly meetings.

The County Clerk advised that the committee had asked for an increased allocation of petrol to allow country

members to attend the meetings. Cr. P. O’Regan moved and Cr. Hempseed seconded that the County offices close for Christmas on Friday, December 20. The date for the next monthly meeting was fixed for December 17. HOSPITAL BOARD. REEFTON, November 29. Mr. J. B. Auld presided at the ' monthly meeting of the Inangahua Hospital Board. Present: Messrs B. Mirfin. T. Watson, J. F. Seawright, P. J. O’Regan. An apology for absence was received from Mr. F. W. Archer.

The chairman moved that the sympathy of the Board be sent to Mr. John O’Regan in his illness, and that Mr. O’Regan be wished a speedy recovery. Seconded by Mr.* Mirfin, and carried. Letters were received from the Department of Health regarding several matters requiring attention at the hospital. The Chairman reported that these had received attention. Miss D. Kirgan, Hawera, applied for a position at the hospital. The Chairman reported that the applicant, would be coming to act as a relieving sister. The Medical Superintendent reported: Admitted 35, .discharged 29, in-patients 36, deaths 3, X-rays 4, births 11, anaesthetics 10, attendances 4, out-patients 1. Matron Kane reported that a relieving nurse was working in Sister McEwen’s place, and that Nurse Kirgan had applied for a position at the Hospital. Inmates of the Ziman Ward needed new suits. The reports of the Medical Superintendent and the Matron were adopted. Tenders for the annual supply of milk and cream were received from: W. G. Poulter, milk sld quart, cream 1/6; Chattockville Farm, milk 31d, -cream 6d. The lower tender was accepted. Mr. Seawright moved and Mr. Watson seconded that the Matron be empowered to procure the necessary extra clothing for the inmates of the Ziman Ward—Carried.
