ROTOMANU NOTES

[OUE OWN CORRESPONDENT.] A farewell social and dance were tendered to Miss K. Gibson in the Roto Manu Hall on Saturday evening last. The chairman, Mr J. Ryan, said that they were all sorry to lose Miss Gibson, who had proved herself to be an efficient and obliging postmistress, which position she had held for s‘even years. Mr J. Graham spoke on behalf of the W.E.1., and also Mr H. Hodgkinson. Miss Brenda Haste presented Miss Gibson with a roll of notes on behalf of the residents. Visitors from Greymouth and all the surounding districts were present, and music was supplied by Mr N. Nestor, W. Becker and Jim Ryan, jun. The dairying industry will soon be in full swing, and the Golden Coast Dairy Company’s cream lorry visited the district for the first time this season, collecting cream. Owing to the mild Winter all the stock have come through in good condition, and so far losses are only ..slight, with a very good lambing on all farms. The Grey County Council’s roadgrader has been working in the district for some days, and the roads are now in first-class order. > The bobby calf industry has made a start, and so far two fully loaded trucks have left for the freezing works in Canterbury, with several yet to leave once weekly: The action of the Railways Department in having steam-heated carriages placed on the Otira line during last Winter was much appreciated by the travelling public. With Miss I. Vallance secretary, the Roto Manu (junior) Red Cross Guild held a successful concert in the school on Wednesday last, and a profit of £3 was made. ’ j
