BILLETING AND ALLOWANCES. Whatever Hitler’s plans . for invasion, there is no chance of Britain’s defences being' impeded by hordes of refugees, as happened in Belgium and France (says the London “Daily Telegraph”). Plans have been worked out by the Ministry of Home Security for the evacuation of certain areas in case of need, and billeting surveys in- reception areas are being conducted by the Ministry of Health. Householders will be required to furnish lodgings only, for which the pay will be 5/- a week for each adult and 3/- a week for children. Refugees from any danger area, if without means, will be entitled to relief from Assistance Boards of the Ministry of Labour. This already applies to foreign refugees. Meanwhile arrangements are being made, for billeting the largest number of men ever under arms in this country. Billeting allowances, recently increased in view of the higher cost of living, are: For Officers: 3/- a night -for the first officer and 2/- for each additional officer, for bed and attendance. Officers will pay for meals at prices agreed on between them and householders. For Other Ranks: lOd a night .for the first soldier and 8d for others. Breakfast, 9d; midday dinner, 1/2; tea, 3d; supper, sd. Soldiers, if issued with food, may cook it in the householders’s pots and pans. If nothing but attendance and bed be required the rate is reduced to 6d a night. Meals shall include: . ■ Breakfast: soz bread, loz butter, 1 pipt tea, with milk and sugar, 4oz bacon, loz marmalade.' - Dinner: lOoz meat, 3oz bread, lOoz potatoes, Boz other vegetables, 4oz pudding. . , Tea: 4oz bread, -Joz margarine, 1 pint tea, with milk and sugar,- 2oz jam.
