PATRIOTIC FUND APPEAL
MR. J. ABEL AS ORGANISER. [per press association.] WELLINGTON, September 20. The secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board (Mr. G. A. Hayden) announced to-day that Mr. J. Abel, of Wellington, had been appointed honorary organiser of the Dominion-wide campaign by the Provincial Patriotic Councils to raise £1,000,000. Mr. Abel, he said, had offered his services in this capacity, and they had been accepted with appreciation. The campaign has begun with an appeal for funds for the relief of victims of the German air raids on London, and will continue for the purpose of raising funds to give assistance when required to the United Kingdom and the British Empire overseas, to provide comforts for New Zealand troops overseas and within New Zealand, and also to enable provision to be made for the rehabilitation of the men and for assistance to their dependents. In making the announcement of the appointment, Mr. Hayden referred to the success Mr. Abel had achieved as honorary organiser of the appeal conducted by the joint council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society for funds for the sick, wounded and distressed. More than £580,000 had been raised by this campaign, the result of which was due largely to Mr. Abel’s organising ability. He was sure the organisation of the campaign by the Provincial Patriotic Councils was in capable hands. Mr. Abel is a member of the National Patriotic Council, and for many years has participated in health and patriotic work. GREYMOUTH PATRIOTIC FUND. Help is required for our soldiers and their dependents. Donations may be forwarded to the “Star” Office, or to Mr. F. H. Denton, Town Clerk, who will issue all official receipts:-v
