SCRAP METAL COLLECTION

GREYMOUTH NEXT SATURDAY. Residents of Greymouth are reminded that, on Saturday next, September 28, the first collection of scrap metal will be undertaken in the Borough, as part of the Dominion effort to contribute towards the winning of the war. . Ample notice is being given to citizens, so that they may, before next Saturday, gather suitable metal. Due notice will be given through the Press as to the approximate time of collection, and the points at which the material is to be deposited by residents. The following is a list of requirements:— Brass and bronze: Hard golden metal—Used for fire irons, ornamental knobs, candle sticks and plates, and screws, hinges and household fittings. Copper: Soft red metal —Used for pipe, wire, sheet metal work, water fittings, and some kettle bottoms. Lead: Very soft and heavy dull grey metal —Used for water pipes, weights, sinkers, flashing for windows, and ridging. Some paste tubes. Zinc: Brittle grey metal—Used for sheet fittings and for perforated sheet in safes, etc. Some linings of packing cases. Antimony: Brittle white metal — Used in white caste metal ornaments such as trinket boxes, toys. Tin: Soft white metal—ln solder, in toothpaste tubes, much “silver paper.” Aluminium: Soft very light white metal—“ Silver paper” of the more brittle kind, pots and' pans. Many household, articles. Note: Wrought iron and steel, old number-plates, tins, corrugated and galvanised iron are not yet required.
