RUNANGA NOTES
[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thirty members of the ’Runanga ’branch of the Red Cross Society were presented with their Home Nursing Certificates at a gathering in the Presbyterian Hall. The presentations were made by Mrs. S. Braithwaite. The following received certificates:— Mrs. N. Smith, Mrs. J. Bell, Mrs. E. Francis, Miss E. Davison, Miss N. Storie, Mrs. E. Martin, Mrs. M. Hall, Mrs. J. McLeod, Mrs. M. Burgess, Miss M. Tyson, Mrs. O. Braithwaite, Mrs. L. Wright, Mrs. P. Strang, Mrs. M. Smith, Miss S: Smeaton, Miss A. Sheard, Mrs. N. Flood, Mrs. E. Critchley, Mrs. J. Lee, Miss M. Strang, Miss J. Tyson, Miss A. Livesey, Mrs. F. Barker, Mrs. M. Gillaly, Miss H. Rae, Mrs. A. Reid, Miss D. Kennedy, Miss E. Darwell, Miss L. McCracken and Miss M. Walker. A farewell afternoon was tendered Mrs J. Davey in the Gymnasium Hall yesterday by the committee of the Red Cross Society and Patriotic Society. A presentation of a crystal jug and sweet dish was made by Mrs E. Flood, and good wishes were extended to the guest who is leaving to reside in Christchurch. The Runanga Patriotic Society has received donations from the following:—R.S.A. ball £.30/2/-, State School collection £l/17/2. The annual competition for the Cook Cup was held at the weekly meeting of the Runanga Debating Club on Thursday, when Mr W. Wick presided. The competition was for prepared speeches, and the following took part:—Mr S. Braithwaite, “Perfect Lining”; Mr W. Patterson, “History of Coal Mining”; Mr L. O’Loughlin, “Prospects of the Paper Industry”;' Mr D. Barnes, “History of Broadcasting”; Mr J. Unwin, “History of the Labour Movement”; Mr R. Bowman, “The Industrial Revolu- 1 'tion” (England); Mr R. Ewan, “History of Gold Mining Industry.” The judge. Mr J. A. McLeod, placed Mr Unwin first and Messrs Ewan and i Braithwaite, equal, second. Mr Mc"Leod was thanked for his services.
