’ MEETINGS TO COME. September 21. —Geraldine. September 21. —Marton. September 28.—Kurow. * September 28.—Foxton. September 28, 30.—Ohinemuri. October 3,' s.—Hawke’s Bay. October 10, 12.—Dunedin. October 12;—Otaki Maori., October 12, 14.—Auckland. October 17, 19.—Masterton. Impressive Win: Hearth was an impressive winner at Geraldine yesterday, and may be capable of repeating to-morrow. Another in the sprint field who should show an early return is Toro Koura, who was not in the picture early, but finished strongly into third place. History to Repeat?: Two years ago, Petersham ran third' aflong odds in the Geraldine, Cup, and then won the nine furlongs | event on the second day. The! Shambles gelding was a good second in the Cup yesterday, and will be, suited by the shorter journey in to-{ morrow’s principal event. j Bronwen: j The 1939 Railway Handicap winner Bronwen, formerly trained at Takanini by E. Pope, is in future to be trained at Awapuni by G. W. New, who is also training Don Quex for her owner, Mr. C. W. Jackson. Bronwen was given a rest after racing at the June meeting at Ellerslie, and she is in capital order to go ahead with her preparation. She may be trained for the Stewards’ Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton. The Mighty Fallen: ! It is interesting to note that among! the low-priced stallions advertised for this season in N.S.W. is Gilt Edge (Valais-Glittering Gold), whose fee is 15gns. At 5000gns he was third-highest-priced yearling ever sold in Australia, but though he won races, his turf deeds were not in keeping with what he cost. He is the sire of Lovable (V.A.T.C. Debutante Stakes) and several other' winners, and, though few were of special note, he is not too old at 15 to beget something of,real class.

Luck Plays Part: Everyone recognises what a lot of luck there is in the purchase of yearlings, and none of those sold in 1938 at. 700 gns or over did sufficiently well early in their two-year-old careers to be topwoights of their age in the coming Melbourne Cup. Those heading the three-year-olds in Australia, are Lucrative (450gns) 7.6 and Trueness (500gns) 7.4, the latter, as she has a pound over w.f.a., being actually rated the best of her age. Tidal Wave (the Tiderace-My Own colt who topped the Trenrham sales at 1,450 gns), has 7.1, Bonny Vale (1,400 gns) 6.12, Balkan Chief (l,100gns) 7.2, Juma (l,lsogns) 7.2, Distinction (750gns) 7.2, Fur Trader (750gns) 7.2. Since the weights were issued, some of those mentioned have shown improvement, but it cannot be said that the buyers of ihany of the highest-priced yearlings of 1938 have yet anything on which to congratulate themselves. NOTES ON THE RACING ' [SPECIAL TO “STAR.”] o CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 19. The Geraldine Racing Club held a most successful day’s racing at Orari to-day. The attendance was the largest for many years past, and the totalisator turnover showed 'an increase of close on £4OOO. The Geraldine Cup was won by Night Dress, who had run good .at. Riccarton and Ashburton, but who was not in much demand. He followed Petersham into the home run, and gradually getting his measure won comfortably. Glenora Boy was a good third, two lengths in front of Roy Bun, who was well back until the closing stages. Combat was the early leader, and at one stage was several lengths out in front, but commenced to tire as soon as the straight was reached. Night Hawk, ridden by an apprentice, was prominent turning for home, but failed to finish on. Hearth had a fairly easy task in the Squatters’ Handicap, her first open success. Gay Parade piloted her into the straight, but the latter finished on too solidly. Toro Koura, never near the leaders on this occasion, came with a late run for third, beating Rebel Star, who was also not in the picture as in recent races. Skyrena and Kilrobe both ran well for about five furlongs only. Recollection, racing in the same interest as Night Dress, made _ light work of his reasonable impost in the First Hurdles. He drew up to the pacemaker Jewish Lad rounding the home turn, and jumping the last hurdle in front cantered home from Master Dingle, who outstayed Jewish Lad. Arita- was six lengths away in front of Courtyard and Donadea. All Night, trained by the veterari W. McDonald, won the Ohapi Hack Handicap, a maiden event, after a creditable effort. He gave the leaders an appreciable lead turning for home, but'crept on the pacemaker Green Gables, and wore him down to beat him by half a length. Wild Coon was a moderate third, two lengths in front of Camphor, Richelieu Pear] z and Urge.

' Halt, a big long-striding gelding by Nightmarch from the Winkie mare Peho, sprung a surprise by winning the Raukapuka Hack Handicap in an effortless manner. Raceaway led him into the straight, . but Halt soon streaked to the front and was pulling up at the post. Airline finished on into second .place well clear of Taxpayer, wh’o did not race up to his Riccarton form, but is a likely improver at the meeting. Raceaway weakened into fourth place. / Iceland Spar was better supported than Dranoel in the Belfield Hack Handicap, and with half the journey covered, his chance of even getting into the money did not look very hopeful, but he put in some remarkable work in the run home, and collared Dranoel and Ferriby on the post. It vzas an outstanding performance under q big weight, but no doubt Dranoel would have held him off with a stronger horseman in control. Dranoel beat Ferriby by a head, with Great Night another head away, a neck in front of Whiphand, who had acted as leader for most of the journey.

TROTTING EVENTS Both trotting events were won by Haughty, a five-year-old mare by Nelson Derby from Regal Voyage owned and trained by. Mr. B. Grice and driven by O. E. Hooper. She came from well back in the first event, the Geraldine Handicap, and had no trouble in beating Passing By and Happy Man. . In the secgnd event, Haughty was penalised 12 yards, and after making up her ground smartly, she gradually improved her position, and once turned for home, she ran past the leaders, and again won easily from Manawai and Irish Dusk, with Lorene Vai and Oasis next.

November 2 —Wellington. November 2—lnvercargill. November 12, 14, 15 —N.Z. Metropolitan. November 28, 30—Forbury Park. November 30, December 7 —WaikaA Double Winner: Haughty, winner of both lightharness events at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting yesterday, is a five-year-old mare by Nelson Derby from Regal Voyage, who in her day vzas a good class performer and held a record of better than 4.20 for two miles. Cruiser: Cruiser came from the clouds to finish fourth in the Harper Handicap at New Brighton, and were he not an arch-deceiver, many would be prepared to follow him on that performance. He is off the front, of the Wilford Memorial at Hutt Park, to-morrow, and on his best behaviour would take a deal of beating. Novices: R. H. Butterick, who owned and trained that grand trotter Peggotty, has two novices in Ardglass and All Gallant engaged at Hutt Park. Ardglass is a five-year-old bay gelding by Wrack from the Logan Pointer mare PeaYl Pointer, who produced Kerppton, Return Voyage, Nicoya, White Satin, and Plain Pearl, while All Gallant is a four-year-old brown gelding by Gallant Knight from the Great Audubon mare Nyallo, the dam of Taxpayer and Refund. Breach of Rules?:

The Gerajdine Racing Club yesterday apparently committed a breach of the Rules of Trotting when it allowed 20 horses to start from the lirrt.it of the Geraldine Trot Handicap, of one mile and three furlongs. A table compiled by the New Zealand Trotting Association gives the safety number of starters at the mile and three furlongs post at Geraldine as 16, but to this number may be added three horses. Had the race been run in divisions the Geraldine Club would have had to increase the stake by at least 50 per cent. The failure of the club to run the race in divisions will probably be the subject of a discussion at the meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association on October 2. Lady Milne: Lady Milne raced consistently last season, and has opened this term in an attractive manner. Last year-this young mare won four races, was second in two others, and third in three. At Addington in March she registered 3.15 3-5 when she finished third to Guncase and Ochiltree in the Linwood Handicap, and at Timaru in June she won from Worthy Need and Ringtrue in 3.18 3-5. That she. has maintained this good form she demonstrated at Addington last month, when she was twice successful over two miles. On the second day she won the Lincoln Handicap A frorp Quest and Chatmos, and was again a winner on the third day, when she captured the Federal Handicap from Josedale Grattan and King Potts. In this race Lady Milne started from 4.31, but registered 4.19 to win by a length from Josedale Grattan, who

was conceding the winner 12 yards, Lady Milne is by Man-o’-War, whose stock usually improve with age. Trainers at Wellington: Trainers' with horses engaged at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow include the following: J. Flanagan (Black Native and Stepson), F. J. Smith (Vain Lad, Rama Direct, Parauri, and Village Maid); F. C. Dunlevy (Hatrack); L. F. Berkett (Tonee, Prince McElwyn, Mongolian), J. Bryce (Paddy’s Harvest and Shadow Maid); J. S.
