MAY “POOL” BEER
LONDON BREWERS’ SCHEME f LONDON, July 20. Plans are being instituted for brewers in Britain to pool their resources of beer, in case of the bombing of breweries, dislocation of transport or overwhelming demands for beer in certain areas caused by evacuation, a preponderance of military camps, or establishment of munition factories. Already a mutual assistance scheme is ready to operate in London; a similar scheme is being organised in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire; and the brewers in the Midlands are arranging a meeting to discuss the matter on the same lines. This week saw the first example of this “pool” system. Because of increased demand for beer in the West of England, a West of England brewery cannot supply its London houses. A London brewery is helping out. The head of the London brewery said: “The West of England brewery has few houses in London. Increased demands have been placed on it by the thousands of people who have been evacuated to the West country. So we are supplying the beer in London. At the moment I can see no limitation in the general supply of beer.”
