TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME. September 19, 21. —Geraldine. x September 21.—Marton. September 28.—Kurow. September 28.—Foxton. September 28, 30. —Ohinemuri. October-3, s.—Hawke’s Bay. - October 10, 12.—Dunedin. October 12. —Otaki Maori. October 12, 14.—Auckland. October 17, 19. —Masterton. Valcony: Valcony is the name chosen for a two-year sister to Ben Braggie, a brilliant sprinter, who went to India a couple of years ago. Well Related: Cambria, who paid an outsize dividend in the Juvenile Handicap at Avondale, is a sister to Bronwen, the Railway Handicap winner. They are by Cambria Paf'k (Kilbroney—Tact) from Recipio (Lucullus —Recoup). Neither Cambria Park nor Recipio was raced. Disappointed: The Raker did no better in the Ashburton Cup than in his two previous races in open company, and he was not paid up for in the Geraldine Cup. The way he won his succession of victories in hack company suggested big things for the Croupier gelding, and no doubt he will atone. On a Turn: The seven-furlongs barrier at Orari is on a turn, and the horses have to race for over a furlong before they get a straight run. Post positions! are unusually important here, as the angle is such that if a 100 per cent, start is effected it will appear (from the stands) to be a bad one.

Geraldine Cup: Roy Bun will be making an attempt to-morrow to win his second successive Geraldine Cup. He indicated at Ashburton that he is in his best form, and he will be again ridden by the stable apprentice, C. Mackie, who will claim a 71b allowance, bringing his weight down to 7.7. This will be Mackie’s first ride over a middle distance.

Marshall Hall: Considering that he was having his first race since Easter, Marshall Hall was responsible for a pleasing performance in winning the Flying Handicap at Avondale, and he looks certain to develop into a class performer. He is by the Melbourne Cup winner, Hall Mark, from the imported mare Legality, who has already produced other winners in Bambury, Whirling and Queen’s Counsel. For Sale:

An eight-year-old gelding Conversion is advertised for sale. He is by Paper Money from Pepper Pot, by General Latour, and last season ran three thirds in eight starts. In the previous season, Conversion had eight starts, without a placing, but in the 1937-38 season as a five-year-old won three races, and had a second and a third in 18 starts. His last winning effort in that season was over five furlongs at Pahiatua on a very heavy track when he beat Okawa and Short Circuit into the places, with Rustem, and Free Gold among the also starteds. He has won in all kinds of going. Miss Baffles:

The breeding of the Avondale Stakes winner, Miss Baffles, has some South Island interest. The filly is by Baffles from Tractrix, a mare by Tractor from Guizark (IJautiform — Petrovna). Petrovna was a smart sprinter by Stepniak from Irene. Baffles is a half-brother to Manna, and cost 6000gns as a yearling. Miss Baffles, the first of her sire’s .stock to race, brought 60gns at the yearling sales, and the buyer (Mrs. F. Farrell) has now passed her on to Mr. E. G. Bridgens (the well-known Auckland trotting man) for 500gns. Miss Baffles will remain in A. Cook’s stable. /

A Prospective Stayer: Beau Leon, winner of the Avondale Guineas on Monday, is a son of Beau Pere and the English-bred mare Lady Bede, dam also of Princess Bede and Galilee. He was one of the most attractive youngsters seen, out early last season, but was not hurried i-and did not strike winning form until his fourteenth and last start of the term, at Avondale, last April. On resuming recently, he ran a close second to Classic at the Pakuranga Hunt' fixture, and indications point to his developing into one of the leading three-year-olds of the present season. Beau Leon is owned by his breeder, Mr. E. H. Cucksey, of Te Awamutu.
