PETROL RATIONING
GARAGE MEET. The serious effect of petrol rationingj, on the motor trade, was. discussed, last evening, at a meeting attended by. fifty employees of the various garages in Greymouth. It was pointed out by several speakers that already many men had lost their positions and that if the Government did not release more petrol in October, conditions would be such that several more employees of tlie garages would be obliged to seek other employment, because of. retrenchments. ’ It was unanimously agreed that the following resolution be forwarded to the Prime Minister: “That this meeting of motor trade employees in Greymouth do hereby request the Government to .release more ' petrol for the use of private and commercial owners, so that "we may be kept in employment and carry out the Government’s own wish to ‘work for dur lives,’ thereby assisting materially in New Zealand’s war effort.” The following committee was elected: Messrs P. Couchman, A. Eaty, F. Myers, A? Westwood, A. Christensen, W, Buchanan, A. Johnston. TRADE COMBINATION, WELLINGTON, September 18. A combined meeting of the New Zealand Garage Proprietors’ and Petrol Resellers’ Associations decided to-day to come together, along with the tyre and battery retailers, as the New Zealand Retail Motor Trade Association, Incorporated. The plan is for a Dominion organisation, with branches divided into sections representing the different trades. The general opinion was that a combination of forces was necessary in these difficult' times.
