TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

MEETINGS TO COME. I - J2 1 September 19, 21.—Geraldine. September 21.—Marton. September 28.—Kurow. September 28. —Foxton. September 28, 30. —Ohinemuri. October 3, s.—Hawke’s Bay. October 10, 12.—Dunedin. October 12.—Otaki Maori. October 12, 14.—Auckland. October 17, 19— Masterton. Gold Court: Although Gold Court is now a six-year-old, the manner in which he won the Trial Handicap at the Wanganui meeting at Awapuni, indicated that he will be heard from again. Will Improve: Iceland Spar should soon improve on his fourth at the Ashburton meeting. The Australian bred gelding began well, but went back quickly. He was noticed, finishing strongly in fourth place.

Named: The two-year-old filly by Salmagundi from Shelter has been named Sing Sing. She is engaged in M’Lean Stakes to be decided next month, and is trained by A. M‘Kay at Riverton. There are several youngsters by Salmagundi showing promise in the south.

Avondale Cup Winners: Since St. Paul won his third Avondale Cup in 1898 with 10.8, some good horses have had their names inscribed in the list. California carried 9.12 to victory, and Chortle scored with 9.9. Other . winners include Nonette, Record Reign, Gold Light, Te Kara, and Historic.

Milanion: Milanion, who scored at long odds at the Avondale meeting yesterday, is a five-year-old by Baralong from Imperil When coupled with Hackenschmidt on the first day, Milanion was sent out favourite, but Hackenschmidt was not started yesterday.

Won Well: Royal Lancer (by Irish Lancer) who won the Novice Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday, was not troubled to record his victory, and he can be expected to repeat at short notice. He is highly regarded but has been troubled with lameness.

Strong Finishes: Star Zone, a four-year-old mare by Thomond, produced two great finishing efforts at the Wanganui meeting at Awapuni. Thomond’s stock almost invariably relish heavy going, and Star Zone is apparently no exception. She is due for an early win.

Greymouth-owned: Leighnor, who is engaged in the six furlongs hack race at Geraldine on Thursday, is a three-year-old gelding by Leighon-Hark For’ard, and is owned by Mr. W. Greenhill, of Greymouth. Leighnor, who will be having his first race, is trained by P. T. Hogan, at Washdyke.

Good Race: ..j,.-.. .... i'~. Dranoel ran a fine race to be second to Prudent Prince (who is now out of hacks) at Ashburton on Saturday, and may be returned a winner at Geraldine. Usually, Dranoel drifts early in his races, but, on Saturday, he was always well placed and finished strongly.

Entail: F. Hall has put in a lot of time on Entail, and may soon be rewarded. Entail tailed off early in the Ashburton Handicap, but soon moved up and was in front five furlongs from home. He remained at the head of the field to the straight entrance where he faded quickly, but the race should do him a lot of good. Entail is an eight year-old by Posterity from Episode.

Roy Bun: Mr. T. E. Coates’s Roydon-Baby Bun gelding Roy Bun, won the Spring Handicap, at Ashburton pointlessly, and it was an excellent trial for his Geraldine engagements this week. The manner of Roy Bun’s victory was characteristic, for he was not sighted until the last furlong and then finished all over his opponents. He won the Geraldine Cup last year, and ridden. in behind this year, he will make a strong bid for victory again.

Westport J.C.: t At the annual meeting of the Westport Jockey Club, on Monday evening, the election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr A. Morley (reelected); president, Mr A. G. Colvin; committee, Messrs J. Menzies, E. McPadden, W. Craddock, J. Scanlon, M. Neil, W. Peterson, W. Jones, C. Thomas, and J. Brown. It was decided to consider the postponement of next year’s meeting from April 5 and 7, to dates coinciding with the opening of the Westport-Inangahua line.
