Mr. H. D. Double, Public Works Department, Greymouth, left to-day, on transfer to Tekapo. He was accompanied by Mrs. Double.

A London cablegram announced the death of Sir Harold Carpenter, whose body was found in a stream near Swansea. He was born in 1875. He was a leading authority on metallurgy.

A London cablegram announced that Lieutenant James Martin, R.N.V.R., was killed as a result of enemy action at sea. He was a member of Sir Douglas Mawson’s 1929 expedition to the Antarctic.

A Press Association message from Wellington stated that news ’ has. been received of the death in the Gilbert Islands of Mr. W. A.-Levett, who was attached to the headquarters in that area of the London Missionary Society.

Victoria University College nominations for Rhodes Scholarships were decided by the Professorial Board, today, as follow: Norman Andrew Morrison, at present a pilot officer engaged on instructional duties at Wigram, and Ronald John Corkill, a member of the, staff of the Correspondence School at Wellington. Morrison, 24, is an LL.B., and is sitting for his LLM. this year. Corkill, 24, is a 8.A., with the Diploma of Education, and is sitting for honours in English, this year. Whether New Zealand Rhodes Scholars will go to Oxford, next year, is still uncertain. The Rhodes trustees have authorised the selection of the 1941 scholars, but have reserved the right not to take them to Oxford, if circumstances do not warrant it.— Press Assn.
