HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

, MONTHLY MEETING. [our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, September 17. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening, the Deputy-Mayor, Cr. A. R. Elcock, presiding over the following members: Crs. G. Heinz, D. P. Stuart, J. Fox, W. H. Stopforth, C. Caliari, T: D. Duff. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. F. D. E. Freitas and H. T. Parry. It was decided to call tenders for the painting of the sexton’s residence and slaughterman’s residence, labour only. Accounts amounting to £722/3/8 were passed for payment. Receipts were reported to be £2,585/6/-, and expenditure £395/3/1. It was resolved to rate church properties on the same basis as last year. The Abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of August amounted to 40 cows, 28 heifers, 47 ■ bullocks, 199 sheep, 20 lambs, 11 pigs, 1 calf; condemned, 2 cows. Fees collected for month amounted to £5B 17/6 as compared with £77/18/- for the corresponding month last year.

CORRESPONDENCE. From W. Connor, slaughterman, application to be granted twelve working days’ annual leave from September 30.—Granted. From the secretary, Westland Branch, Automobile Association, advising that the Association does not contemplate any further action in regard to the turnouts on the Hokitika Bridge at present. From R. A. Campbell, consulting engineer, forwarding a report on the pumps, following his personal inspection.—Consideration deferred. From the Dairy Research Institute, Massey College, Palmerston North, advising that a large deposit of Bentonite has been discovered, in the North Island, and that it can be used for stopping seepage in reservoirs and that a one-pound sample had been posted.—Referred to overseer. From L. C. Kernahan, secretarytreasurer, Canterbury Employers’ Association, advising that Mr. D. I. Macdonald is severing his connection with the Association at the end of the month and asking for anything up to £l/1/- for a presentation and suitable function for Mr. Macdonald.— Referred to the Mayor. From the manager, abattoirs, advising that in regard to the runner contract he had communicated with the butchers and they are making their own arrangements, thus relieving the Council of making arrangements for renewing the contract. From Mr. Frank Stewart stating that he was now having timber carted on to his section in Brittan Street, and asking that the road be extended.— Deferred pending payment of rates, Council reserving right to revalue section. '

From H. M. Coulson strongly protesting against the proposal to establish a petrol dump opposite his property in north Gibson Quay; also from a numbei’ of ratepayers and residents of the Borough, protesting against any more facilities for storage of inflammable oils in quantity; seeing that the dump provided by the Harbour Board can meet all requirements.—Objections upheld and application refused. From A. R. Elcock asking consent for sub-division of section in Brittan Street, on behalf of G. Perry and T. Seebeck .—Approved. From E. D. Sherriff asking position with regard to tenants, on reserve leased by him.—Lessee to make own arrangements.
