HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

HOKITIKA, August 20. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr G. A. Perry, Crs. F. D. E. Freitas, J. Fox, G. Heinz, T. W. Duff, H. T. Parry, C. Caliari. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. W. H. Stopforth, D. P. Stuart, and A. R. Elcock.

The financial statement showed receipts £516/11/1, expenditure £lB3l/11/11. Acounts amounting to £964/16/11 were passed for payment.

The Abattoirs’ report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of July amounted to 49 cows, 38 heifers, 79 jbtilloeks, 310 sheep, 16 lambs, 23 pigs, 30 calves; condemned, 1 bullock. Fees collected for July amounted to £93/14/6, compared with £BO/14/for the corresponding month last year. ' - ’ W. S. Christiansen and others applied for the installation of a street light at the end of Sale Street. —On the recommendation of the Chairman of Works, it was decided to alter the present lighting in that locality. Cr D. F. E. Freitas was appointed a council representative on the Westland Hospital Board, in place of Cr Turner (resigned). The tender of AV. F. Ashley for the lease of Municipal Reserve 494, Fitzherbert Street, at an anual rental of £l/10/-, was accepted. A motion of sympathy with the Town Clerk, Mr F. G. Coles, in his illness was passed. The Mayor reported that his condition was improving. A deputation from the Westland Dairy Company, consisting of Messrs M. Wallace (chairman), Algar (manager) and Salvigny (secretary) waited on the council, with a view to obtaining a revision of the charges for water levied on the company.— After hearing the arguments of .the deputation, the Mayor assured them that every consideration would be given the company in adjusting the rates charged. M-iss M. L. Tomlinson wrote lor permission t’o install a pipe drain lor surface water, from her section into the Hampden Street drain—Referred to the Works Committee to take action. . Mr Reuben Butler wrote asking that a depression in front of his P ro " perty in Upper Sale Street be filled in, and also that the drain be attended to. The Hokitika Beautifying Association wrote, thanking the Council for assistance and requesting attention to portion of Gibson’s Quay.—Referred to Works Committee.,
