CHRISTCHURCH, August 2. The steamer Tees (545 tons), which has been engaged in the Chatham Islands trade for many years, has been sold by the liquidators of the Westland Shipping Company, Ltd., to Southern Traders, Ltd., a Wellington firm. Holm and Company will be managing agents for the vessel, and Captain S. Holm is at present in Christchurch in connection with the recommissioning of the Tees. Mr H. L. Herdman (Lyttelton) will retain the local agency. The Tees is to be engaged in the Chatham Islands trade, but will be used in coastal work between trips to the islands. She is to leave Lyttelton, to-day for Greymouth, where she will load for Wellington. Later the Tees will return to Lyttelton to load for the islands.
The Westland Shipping Company was floated in 1922 by Mr. J. S. Robertson, of Greymouth, and" Captain A. T. Dowell, with a capital of £15,000. Citizens of Greymouth provided practically all of the £ 12,000 that was raised on the West Coast, and £3,000 was subscribed by Chatham Islanders. The Company sent Captain Dowell to England in 1923, to purchase a vessel, and he arrived back in New Zealand in 1924, with the steamer Tees. The vessel was purchased for the West Coast trade and the Chatham Islands run, and she has been operating since her arrival in 1924, mostly in the Chathams trade. She has made many visits to Greymouth. Accommodating 17 passengers, the Tees has been the sole passenger ship running to the Chatham Islands. Included in her general cargo from the Islands have been fish from the freezing works on consignment to Wellington.
