HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council took place yesterday. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) presided ovei' the following members: Crs. D. P. Stuart, C. Caliari, J. Fox, A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff and F. E. Freitas. Apologies for absence -were received from Crs. W. H. Stopforth, H. T. Parry and G. Heinz.

The financial statement showed: Receipts £972/12/3; expenditure £1220/8/4. Accounts amounting to £1689/2/6 were passed for payment. The Abbatoir report stated: Stock slaughtered for the month of June amounted to 31 cows, 30 heifers, 61 bullocks, 279 sheep, 61 lambs, 29 pigs, 15 calves. Condemned: One cow and one pig. Fees collected for month amounted to £77/11/-, compared with the sumjif £94/16/- collected for the same period last year. The tender for printing of balance sheet, of W. E. Richards and Son, was accepted. A requisition from the sexton was authorised.

An application for attention to drain in upper Livingstone Street was granted, drain to be piped. Only one application was received for the position of gardener and caretaker of reserves. —Referred to Mayor and Town Clerk.

Tenders for grazing right for Municipal Reserve 446 were received. That of Mr E. T. Sherriff, for £2O per annum, was accepted, with a stipulation that any drainage must not be into the East Belt drain. Permission granted to successful tenderer to fall line of trees on western boundaries.

The application of the Library Committee for an increased subsidy to enable the Committee to .avail itself of the benefits of the Government’s free library system was declined, on the recommendation of the special sub-committee set up to examine io proposal. The Council expressed satisfaction at the treasurer’s report that only 41 per cent of the arrears of rates were written off for. the period 1935-36. — This percentage represented the sum of £422 and the period was approximately at the end of the depression. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, advising that the Governor-General in Council has appointed Mr John James McIntosh to be a member of the Hokitika Fire Board.

From the Secretary, National Council for Reclamation of Waste Material, advising that two members of the Council, Messrs E. A. Batt and J. Reid, will reach Hokitika on Friday, July 19, with a view to addressing the Council, and also citizens of the -town on the reclamation of waste organisation and with the object of setting up a committee to organise and control the whole of the South Westland district.—Decided to call a meeting. From the N.Z. Refrigerating Co., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika abattoir area during the month -of June, 1940, viz: 37 sheep. ' From the Main Highways Board, advising that the grant, in approved cases, of one pound for one pound subsidy towards the cost of both construction and maintenance of footpaths on State and ordinary Main Highways only applied to the sealing or re-sealing of footpaths and does not include removal of weeds or the spreading of fine gravel except in conjunction with re-sealing work. From Mr W. S. Christenson and six others, asking for the installation of a street lamp in north Sale Street and approximately 7 chains north of Park Street, and also asking that the old roadside pit on the other side of the proposed street lamp be filled in with waste strippings from the gravel pit.—Public Works Committee to report. From Mr J. J. Thompson, asking that some gravel be placed at the pie cart stand in Tancred Street and also on the road at the entrance to his residence in Hampden Street. — Referred to Works Committee to act. From Mrs M. M. Butland, Gibson’s Quay, application for permission to instal a septic tank.—Granted subject to health regulations. From the secretary, Westland Hospital Board, forwarding copy of the Board’s estimated receipts and payments for the year ending March 31, 1941, as approved by the Minister of Health, and also a copy of the Board’s receipts and payments for the year ended March 31, 1940. The levy on the Hokitika Borough Council amounts to £2202/2/8 (with a decrease of £97/14/8 on the previous year). , From the secretary, Westland Hospital Board, asking the Council to appoint a qualified person as one of its representatives on the Hospital Board in place of Mr J. L. Turner, who has resigned.—Mr, C. Caliari appointed.
