WANGANUI-MARTON RAILWAY
DEVIATION PROGRESS. [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI, July 15. With the completion of tunnels and other works on the Turakina-Okoia railway deviation, which will shorten and straighten the route between Wanganui and Marton and cut down running costs and times, the number of employees is dwindling. Some tunnellers have gone to other works, and about 20 men have left to work at Waiouru military camp. Major works in hand are railway river bridges at Turakina and Wangaehu. Good progress is being made on the Turakina structure. The driving of piles for the third pier is being -finished. Work.on the Wangaehu bridge has been temporarily suspended, the workmen being engaged in helping to dismantle the Port Bowen at Castlecliff. Some bridge equipment is being used for this work. About threequarters of the pier work on the Wangaehu bridge is finished, and the formation of the road approaches to the Wangaehu station yard is ’being carried out.
