-o • MISS A. B. SMEATON A public presentation and social in the Wallsend Hall on Saturday evening, was tendered Miss A. B. Smeaton, who has resigned from the position of Town Clerk of Brunner in view of her approaching marriage, the large and representative attendance testifying to the esteem in which the guest is held. Mr. W. N. Gutberlet (Deputy-Mayor) presided and associated with him on the stage were Mrs. Gutberlet, Cr, Barber and Mrs. Barber, Cr. Harper, Cr. Morgan and Mrs. Morgan, Cr. Eder and Mrs. Eder. Miss Smeaton, Mr. J. Smeaton and Mr. C. E. Broad. Mr. Gutberlet referred to the good citizenship of Miss Smeaton during her life, spent in Brunner, no object or circumstance ever preventing her from being foremost in helpfulness and giving assistance. He referred to her services as Town Clerk and also her activities during the Napier earthquake, and the period of depression, and her connection with every organisation which was for the good and improvement of the community. Mr. Gutberlet said that the courtesy extended by Miss Smeaton to all with whom she came in contact was much
appreciated, and it was with regret that Brunner residents said “au revoir.” On behalf of the residents of the district, Mr. Gutberlet expressed best wishes for a happy and bright future, and extended congratulations to Mr. Broad, Miss Smeaton’s fiance. Councillors Eder, Barber and T. Morgan endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker and Cr. T. Harper, ■ senior Councillor, was called upon to make the presentation. Mr. Harper, in asking Miss Smeaton to accept a handbag containing a substantial cheque from the people of ' Brunner district, said it was a fitting token of the regard and respect in, ; which Miss Smeaton was held. I
Mr. J. Smeaton replied on behalf of his daughter, and expressed appre-. ciation of the manner in which his daughter had been honoured. Mr. C. E. Broad also returned thanks. Miss Smeaton extended a welcome to her Brunner friends to visit her in her home in Greymouth at an early date. Prior to the presentation, Mrs. G. Martin sang “Sincerity,” other vocal items interspersed with dancing during the evening being given by Miss U. Fentiman, Mrs. R. Wick, Mrs. G. 1 Martin and Mr. J. W. McGuinness. Miss M. E. Watson was the accompanist and supplied the dance music. Supper was served by the women’s committee and “Auld Lang Syne” brought a happy function to a close
