TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME June 29.—Waikato. — June 29—Dannevirke Hunt. July 6—Oamaru. July 6—Hawke’s Bay Hunt. July 9, 11, 13—Wellington. July 20 —Waiinate Hunt. July 20 —Manawatu Hunt July 27—Rangitikei Hunt. July 27—Rotorua and Bay of Plenty. July 27—South Canterbury.

Maybe? “Turn all these racehorses into pig meat and let the ‘cockies’ stay at home and produce; let the food that goes into the horses go into the pigs and fowls, and then the newspapers could be cut down by half,” said Mr W. Smith at a meeting of farmers at Eltham, when consideration was being given to increasing production.

In Preference: Lady Tinukle finished strongly when beating everything except the outsider Nereus at Otaki last Saturday, and her future prospects look highly promising. On the first day of the Wellington Meeting she has been nominated for the Whyte Handicap in preference to her older halfsister Mittie, who is listed in the open sprint.

Riders for Dannevirke: Riding engagements announced for Dannevirke are: W. J. Broughton, Squeers; G. R. Tattersail, Jumna; B. H. Morris, Merry Meer, Little Robin, Little Dorrit; S. Waddell, King Mestor; J. Chaplin, Patahi; P. Jarvis, Harbour Bar; P. Rae, Baron Bold, Sir Rodney; N. Cavaney, Gay Chou. Llandaff Back:

After being on the easy list since the June meeting, the brilliant Llandaff is working again at Ellerslie, and he is bearing a bright appearance. The failure of Llandaff at his last start may be attributed to the fact that he could not handle the extremely heavy going, and he will take beating when conditions are more favourable. He should be in great heart for the early Spring meetings. Retired:

Bay Duke, who won the open sprint event on the final day of the Dunedin Winter meeting, has been retired from racing. He is now rising 10 years and has won 14 races and been eight times placed for £1786 10/- in stakes. Although he was never really sound the Diacquenod gelding compiled a fine record, as he was not raced a great deal. Two years ago he broke down almost hopelesly, but he was patched up again and managed to win three races this term. Riders for Te Rapa:

Riding engagements for the Waikato meeting include the following:— J. Mclnally, Hot Box; O. Mclnally, Young Paddon, Etcetera; A. Gilmer, Inness Lad; H. Maria, Mio Fratollo; C. G. Goulsbro, Glenbevan; R. E. Horne, Gas Acre; V. Gollop, Jewelled Girdle, Miss Eureka, Wildore. The apprentice rider W. J. Mudford, has Accepted a retainer as first horse-' man to Mr. W. McA. Duncan. Mudford’s indenture to W. A.. Quinlivan ends on October 25.

From Great Family: Among the maidens engaged at the Dannevirke Hunt meeting is Jumna, a two-year-old filly by Bulandshar from Laison (dam of Quadroon, Florence Mills and Old Bill). Jumna, who is trained at Awapuni by L. Wilson, has shown plenty of promise in private. She comes from a line of cup and classic winners, including Gaine Carrington, Peter Jackson, Wotan, Menelaus, Nones and Prince Paladin, in addition to Old Bill.

Hagen: ’ Having his first race since he was beaten by' Our Jean and Orelio in the Avondale Champion Plate last September, Hagen had the rest of the field in the Tainui Handicap at Otaki, completely at his mercy. His record for the season is three wins in four starts, and he should take toll of middle-distance handicaps next season. He ran out of hack company on Saturday, and his winning stakes now amount to £3lO, with £6O additional place-money. Even with 10.10 tomorrow at Woodville he should take beating. Powers of Starter:

The following item from Sydney is interesting:—At a special meeting of the members of the A.J.C. last week, Mr J. Campbell Jones rose to ‘‘draw, the attention of the chairman to a happening at Victoria Park racecourse a few weeks ago, relating to the position of horses at the barrier.” He stated that a horse who had drawn very wide at the barrier, subsequently started from a position much nearer the rails, and won the race. “He won by only the proverbial whisker,” said Mr Campbell Jones, “and it was generally considered that had he started from his correct position much wider on the track, he would have been beaten. Was the starter within his rights in allowing the horse to take up a more favourable position,” asked Mr Jones. The reply of the chairman, Mr George Main, was that the starter had full control when the horses went to the barrier.

Schooling at Riccarton: Flashlight (G. Ridgway) and El Caballo (P. Boyle) were companions at Riccarton yesterday, over five fences, when the latter pulled off, and Flashlight jumped three more fences alone. He gave his best display to date, and showed marked improvement in getting away from his fences. El Caballo shaped satisfactorily. Tomcat (R. Caddy) and Shangn La (I. Walther) jumped three brush fences well, and Arctic Star (P. Boyle) negotiated five fences without the semblance of a mistake. Tommy Ruff (Ridgway) jumped five fences at a hunting pace. He is a big grey gelding owned by Mrs J. H. Grigg, and is by Royal Mac from a grey Arab-bred mare formerly owned by Mr H. Ensor. He is inclined to jump very big, and may not be capable of winning good races, but will be a useful addition to the ranks of hunter#.

He is an eight-year-old gelding by Nelson Derby from Adelaide Wood, and he won attractively at the Westland meeting. 1 Different: In New Zealand the “maiden” line in the trotting handicap system is 3.43. although a horse is required to step 3.25 or thereabouts to win. In Sydney, under a new scale just adopted, the slowest mark is 3.33. Under the New Zealand method, a pacer which wins'two races is liable to be pegged back seven or eight * secseconds; in Sydney the penalties amount to only two seconds.

Bingen Blood:' Horses with Bingen blood fared successfully at trotting meetings in Auckland during the season recently completed, Nelson Bingen and his sons and grandsons being represented by the winners of 34 races and whose earnings amounted to £6,600. Sons of Nelson Bingen successfully represented were Peter Bingen, Worthy Bingen, Nelson Derby, Great Bingen and Native King and grandsons Nobleman and Bingen Ohimes. Progeny of Nelson Bingen won eight races besides registering many minor placings and they earned £1,700.
