MONTHLY MEETING. ■’ [OUR OWN CORRESrONRENT.] HOKITIKA; June 18. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) presided over the following members: —Crs. A. R. Elcdck, G. Heinz, J. Fox, W. H. Stopforth, C. Caliari, and D. P. Stuart. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. F. D. E. Freitas, H. T. Parry and J. L. Turner. The financial statement showed receipts -at £3OO/18/2, and expenditure £643/7/9. Accounts amounting tn £1220/8/6 were passed for pay-

ment. , _ . The Chairman, Westland Provincial Council, N.Z. Centennial, wrote advising that it was largely due to the untiring effort and ability of the secretary and organiser of the Westland Provincial Council that the Westland Province was so success-. July represented at the Centennial Exhibition, and also that the various activities of the Council had imposed a large amount of work on the section, for which he had received no remuneration, and it is suggested to. collect from the local bodies and hand a cheque to the secretary. On a population basis the Hokitika Borough Council’s proportion would be £7. —Agreed. The secretary of the Westland Hospital Board notified that it is the intention of that Board to make application to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction to borrow the sum of £2,000 for the purpose Ar olfoyntinnc additions to the

heating system at the Westland Hospital, and that any objection to the proposed loan must be received bj the Board within five weeks Iron June 12, 1940. James sent application for permission to instal a septic tank on M.R. 474, S,ewell Street. —Granted, subject to Health regulations. The Public Works Department (through the Westland County Council) wrote that the Westland County Council will be responsible for the maintenance of the Hokitika Aerodrome from June 17, 1940. TOWN-PLANNING SURVEYS. The Chief Surveyor, Hokitika, wrote that upon the request from ’■small local bodies in many parts of New Zealand, the Land and Survey Department has decided to undertake, where requested, the necessary surveys for town planning purposes, and nrovide the technical assistance

to enable the preparation of a complete scheme, and that it is intended io restrict these surveys to boroughs and town districts (generally under 3,000 in population) not having the staff available to undertake the work. The approximate estimate of the cost of survey of the average town district, area 2 square miles (population 1100) including aerial survey, is £l5O. This cost will be payable by the local body concerned, and will naturally. vary considerably, depending upon the particular circumstances in the borough and surrounding areas. The cost of preparing the basic plan and other maps will be. charged to the Land and Survey Department. Hon. secretary, Westland Emergency Precautions Organisation forwarded copies of emergnecy precaution scheme for the County of Westland . and interior boroughs, which has been approved by the Department of Internal’ Affairs, with the comment that from a perusal of the;

' scheme it is apparent that it has been 1 : i prepared with considerable care and I forethought, and the persons respons- I 1 ible are to be commended for their j • efforts, and that. in.the event of an I emergency occurring it is considered ' that the district will have amorgani--1 sation which is able to cope adequately with the situation. Cr. John L. Turner wrote, tendering his resignation as a member of the Borough Council. L. L. Ross cirote drawing attention I to the unsatisfactory condition of the footpath on the east side of Fitzherbert Street, between Weld Street and Gibsons Quay,’through surface water which cannot get away, and also that the road between' the metal and the footpath is soft and requires metal-' • ling.—Referred to overseer for attention.

The secretgry of St. John Ambulance Brigade wrote asking for the use of the Town Hall.—Granted. On. Cr. Fox’s motion, a letter of ’appreciation, for his services was; authorised to be sent to ex-Councillor Turner'. Mr T. W. Duff, who was closest unsuccessful candidate at the last election, was appointed in his place. A. request by the Beautifying Asso- i ciation for permission to grade cer-j tain streets and use the spoil for fill- i ing and beautifying purposes, was' approved, subject to supervision by the Council’s foreman. The Abattoirs’ report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of May amounted to 52 cows, 42 heifers,. 60 jullocks, 318 sheep, 186 lambs, 55

pigs, 23 calves. Cbndemned: _ Two cows. Fees collected for “'month amounted to £lOB/8/6 compared with £B9/2/- collected for the corresponding month last year. On the recommendation of the Reserves Committee, it was decided to call tenders for the lease of Reserve 445 for the term of one year, with the right of renewal for five years, on condition that the successful tenderer repair fences and remove gorse, etc. Another recommendation adopted was that applications be called for the position of caretaker of Cass and McAndrew' Squares, applications to be considered at the next meeting.

An application was received from the Library Committee for an additional £lOO per annum subsidy, in order to take advantage of the Government’s free library system and to make the li- t brary able to support itself without a membership charge.—Referred to a committee consisting of Crs. Stopforth, Fox, Stuart, Elcock and the Mayor, to report at next meeting. On the request of the State Housing Department, it was agreed to put 60 yards of metal on Jollie Street between Stafford and Weld Streets. It was resolved to renew the sanitary contract for a further 12 months at the rate of £-670 per .annum. An application by Mrs W. Wilson, Hampden Street, for the piping of a drain was agreed to if applicant provides the pipes.’ Drainage work in Hoffman Street was deferred. Clearing in lower Livingstone Street was authorised. An application for piping of drain by Mr A. Broom, Stafford Street, was agreed to, subject to applicant'providing pipes. Gravelling of new roads in the Cemetery was authorised. It was decided to call tenders for the painting and renovation of the houses of the sexton and manager of the' abattoirs.
