TO-DAYS RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME ' June 15 —Hawke’s Bay. June 22—Otaki-Maori. June 22—Ashburton County. Should Improve: On Foxton form Red Shoes looked an early winner, but she failed at Napier, and again on Saturday. She should improve, being by Beau Pere from the English mare Rapide, dam Qf Speed and Top Flight. Bay Duke:

. Bay Duke was foaled in 1930 and got by Diacquenod—Merry Twinkle, an imported mare by Blink. He has started in 52 races for 15 wins and £1849/10/in stakes, apart from place money.

Cherokee: The King George Handicap winner, Cherokee, was got by Colossus from Orders Bright, by Boniform —Chakwand, by. Hierarch —Peace, by The Officer—Content, by DreadnoughtLullaby, b”- Apremont—Hammock. Severe Loss:

Mr G. J. Barton recently lost in Melbourne the Limond colt Cortina, who succumbed to an attack of tetanus. Cortina was regarded as likely to develop good form. For Australia: »

Beaupartir will be shipped to< Australia this week with the yearlings being taken over from the Grange iStud by M. Grogan. These yearlings were purchased by Australians at the sales in January and have been at the Grange Stud since. Etla:

/Winner of the Maiden Plate at Hastings, Etla, is a three-year-old filly, by Arausio from Angela, a sister to Halley and half-sister to Pewa. Etla has been showing steady improvement vzith racing, but she is not expected to reach great heights. Makoi For Trentham:

The jumper Makoi took no harm from his fall in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie, in which he was going well, and he is having a short let-up prior to resuming work in preparation for the Wellington Racing Club’s Winter meeting at Trentham next month. It is evident from his form at Ellerslie that Makoi is much improved, and he may be a possibility for the Wellington Steeplechase.

Doing Well: Quadroon and Old Bill are both working along well in their strong pacing tasks. Now that the tracks are soft Quadroon is finding conditions more to his liking, and he is a prospect for the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham next month. Old Bill has been nominated for races in Australia, but there is nothing definite yet about his future. 4 Mahala: Since she ran an undistinguished race in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup last year Mahala has been only twice unplaced in steeplechase events; she has won two of them and has been second three times’. She was brought down in the Waikato Steeples when going vjell and finished fourth in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie. Mahala is a safe jumper and a real stayer. Hack Hurdler:

For a beginner Valspear shaped creditably in the two hack hurdle races he contested at the Winter meeting at Ellerslie, finishing second on the first day and being prominent most of the way on the third. The experience should be beneficial to Valspear, who earned the reputation of being unreliable when racing on the flat, and he should have prospects when track conditions are more favourable.

Beeswing:

The latest recruit to the ranks of jumpers at Ellerslie is Beeswing, who shaped well when schooled over the pony hurdles. Although she has been a winner, Beeswing has been disappointing on the flat and failed to make the improvement expected. She belongs to the family that produced the good jumpers Erie and Brushwood Boy and may have possibilities as a hurdler.

Transfer of Stables: T. R. George has taken up his quarters at Opakl, having arrived from Trentham "with 18 horses. Another three horses will be taken to Opaki in a few days. The following are the horses in the team: —Beau Vite, Lady Motava, Foxbridge filly, Payroll, Lady Manna, Dungarvan, Forsake, The Whippet, Beau Coureur, Defoe colt, Galteemore, Paravane, Beau Ciel, Dark Wfater, Batsham, Tamakaha, Lord Quex filly, Duncannon, Trench Law, Kevin and Orlein. Consistent! In her last five starts on the East Coast Vascones has gained three wins, a second and a third, and her success at Hastings on Saturday was gained in smart time. Vascones, who was bred by Mr T. H. Lowry, races in the interests of Messrs A. G. and W. RStead. The filly is a three-year-old daughter of Gascony from Talari, sister to Princess Doreen and Marjory Daw, both speedy mares. Vascones should bo able To extend her record over a middle, distance.

Were They Correct?: The time of 1.11 2-5 for the six-fur long hack at Hastings on Saturday seems extraordinarily good, and so does the 1.19 4-5 of Endorsement for six furlongs and a half. The latter time is only l-ssec outside Gloaming s track record in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, and is better than the time of any other winner of this race, which include such horses as Desert Gold, Sasanof, Affectation, The Hawk, Mireusonta, Glentruin, Gascony, Toxeuma, and Hunting Cry.

Sheeny: Sheeny did not win out of her turn when she won on the final day at W'nigatui. She was concluding her third season on the turf and had run 27 races without scoring a win. Sheeny is bred on lines suggestive of more success than figuring in the “also started” list. She was got by Rahbi from Cessation, by Limond —Termination, by Kilbroney—Culmination, by San Francisco —Stepfeldt, by Norden-j feldt —Steppe. Rabbi was got by j Paladin, and Sheeny should be able to, stav and produce stayers.

Paper Slipper: There has been abroad an oftenexpressed opinion that Roger Slipper did not display his* best in races at Trentham. He never ran a better race

in his life than in the Wellington Challenge Stakes won by Royal Chief. On that occasion Paper Slipper 9.6, Haughty Winner 7.5, and Francis Drake 7.12 set a cracking pace along the back from Smoke Screen 7.3 and Royal Chief 7.8. Francis Drake-, who had developed a cold, dropped out, and the Chokebore Dodge pair came along .stride for stride and all out to beat each other. Just when' in the shadow of the winning post Royal Chief arrived in time to beat Paper Slipper by a nose, with Haughty Winner a head away third. In his 1 next two engagements Royal Chief won the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes and Challenge -Stakes, and then became recognised as a champion.

Promising Sort: By winning the Aidworth Handicap at Wingatui Pink Lad stayed on well and won under 8.9 in 2.39 4-5. The Provincial Handicap was won b' ,r Balmenter with 7.11 in 2.39 3-5, and the Birthday Handicap by Nightwings with 7.9 in 2.36. On paper the above comparisons make Pink Lad a promising sort. He is a well-grown sort with plenty of size and substance, and belongs to one of the oldest families in the Stud Book. He was got by Pink Coat from Carette, by Clarenceux—"'■n tai era, by Lord Rosslyn—Komuri, by Gorton —Lady Gertrude. Komuri is a sister to Euroclydon, a winner of the New Zealand Cup, Derby, and Canterbury Cup. Lord Rosslyn won the Dunedin Cup, and the best-known members of the family include Vladimir, one of the best handicap nerformers of his day. and whose wins included two in the Stewards’ Handicap, Great Easter Handicap, and Great Autumn Handicap.

ENGLISH DERBY. (Received June 13, 9.55 a.m.) LONDON, June 12. The Derby resulted as follows: — Pont Le Veque (Sammy Wragg) 1 Turkhan (C. Smirke) 2 Lighthouse (R. Perryman) .... 3 Sixteen started. Won by three lengths; a short head. Trotting Parisienne Back: Parisienno is back in R. B. Berry’s stable, but she has yet to recommence work. A decision regarding her future will be made when the classes are announced for the new season. She is on hard marks over all distances, and, although it is expected that she will be among those to receive concessions at the end of this season, she may have little chance of ’"-"dug her way in the new season if the clubs decide to continue the policy of middleclass limits in the chWf races. Mervyn Derby:

Mervyn Derby, who will make his next appearance at Ashburton, is trained by J. Bell, jnr., and is by Nelson Derby—Mayis Wood, tie has yet to win a race, but his forward running suggests that his 1 winning turn is not far off. At the recent Ashburton meeting held at Addington Mervyn Derby finished third to Mortlake and Haughty. His time, 4.39 4-5, represented a good effort on a track that was not particularly fast. Back in Work:

Acuity, who has been having a spell for some time, has rejoined the active brigade, this time under the control of J. B. Pringle at Addington. Last season Acuity won five races and added another during the present year. Though she has disappointed on occasions, she is a good racehorse when at her best.

In the Limelight: < R. B. Plaxico, who trained in New Zealand for one season, is kept in the limelight in America through the performances of Miss Endlong, who is rated as one of the best pacers in Ohio. On a half-mile track she has a record of 2.3, made at Toledo. The runner-up was Betty Worthy by Lusty Volo. ' j, i . Whanako: When Whanako won at the Hamilton matinee meeting in January, he gave promise of early success, but he was not hurried and did little racing. By Peter Bingen, dual New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, from Tranquil, by Wildmoor, from Casing, Whanako is a full-brother to the useful performers Transfer and Transwell, and halfbrother to Transworthy. Whanako gives the impression that, like Transwell, he will develop into a sound stayer, in spite of the fact that his dam was purely a sprinter. The way he won at Auckland suggested more successes in the near future.
