MONTHLY MEETING.

HOKIT'KA May 21. The Hokitika Borough Council met yesterday. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. H. T. Parry, G. Heinz, C. Callari, D. P. Stuart, W. H. Stopforth, J. L. Turner, J. Fox, and F. D. E. Freitas. An apology for absence was received from Cr. A. R. Elcock. The Town Clerk was authorised to make necessary arrangements with regard to the surveying and legalising of North Revell Street as part of the Borough. The Council, after a division, decided that the planting of trees in the streets was not desirable and refused permission for the Beautifying Association to plant an experimental avenue in Sale Street. Cr. Stopforth moved that the 1 Reserves Committee be empowered to draw up a schedule of duties and call applications for the position of caretaker of Cass Square, the work to be done on a yearly contract. —Carried. The Treasurer’s report stated that receipts were £412/9/-, expenditure £525/17/11. Accounts amounting to £‘643/7/9 were passed for payment. The abattoir rdport stated: Stock slaughtered for April amounted to 43 cows, 45 heifers, 60 bullocks, 397 sheep, 107 lanjbs, 35 pigs, 16 calves. Condemned, 1 sheep. Fees collected for month amounted to £.lOl/5/6, com-

pared with £B3/17/- collected for the same month last year. It was decided to alter the conditions of the Mayor’s Fund obtained from Sunday pictures, to enable the present credit balance to be handed over to the Business Men’s Association towards their fund for the

provision of conveniences on Cass

Square. . - From the secretary, Marine Depart-, raent, Wellington, regarding status of; a strip of sandhills on the west side; of Revell Street, between Tudor Street, and the north Town Belt, stating that ■ the matter had been investigated and. it rwould appear that it is a matter' for the Council to deal with, as the Marine Department' is unable to locate anything' which shows that that Department has any title to the area, in question. From the Department of Health, suggesting that the Council take action in Regard to the suppression of rats and mice, and asking to be informed in due course of the action taken.— Council to co-operate. * From the Hon. Sec., Joint Council

of the Order of St. John and N.Z. Red Cross Society, appealing for financial assistance to the sick and wounded fund.—£2/2/- granted. From the Commissioner of Transport advising that in regard to the Hokitika-Nelson air service, that it has been found that the . HokitikaWestpprt section cannot be operated with the existing personnel and equipment and stating that the Winter timetable will operate from the 6th instant. —Received with regret. From the Hon. Sec., Hokitika Beautifying Association, advising that the Association is putting in order the section (owned by the High School Board), which will give access to the Memorial Swimming Baths', and asking the Council to instal a surface drain into the Weld Street drain in order to drain the section of surface water. —Approved. From Mr. S. J. Roberts and four other petitioners, drawing attention to the. unsatisfactory condition tot the open' drain on the west side of Hoffman Street between Stafford and Weld Streets and asking that taking of this drain right through Hoffman Street to the river receive favourable consideration. —Referred to Works Committee for report. From Mr. W. Weiblitz, Kokatahi, drawing attention to the excessive growth 'of blackberry and gorse along the frontage of his sections in Livingstone Street, and asking that the growth be cleared. —Referred to Works Committee for report. From Mr. K. F. O’Brien asking that several loads of gravel be spread on the frontage of Municipal Reserve 527,

Brittan Street, between Park and Tudor Streets and also that; the watermain be extended to the land 1 , as he is building a dwelling there.on/at an early date'. —Referred to Works Committee for report. I From Mr. T. W. Barrowman asking: (1) That the depression in the-street at the frontage of his two sections in north Revell Street be filled to provide access' to the sections. (2) That the surface drain pipe- across Sale Street be lowered in order to provide an escape for the surface" water from ' his land and that’the pipe also be .ex-1 tended a distance of approximately two chains. (3) Asking for road ac-; cess to two sections in Rolieston Street, north of Park Street. (4) ; Pointing out that Sale Street north is' not properly aligned as it follows the old .shallowrush track.-—Referred to Works' Committee to report. From - the Department of Housing Construction asking the Council to reicnsider. its decision in regard' to the lowerihg of watermains in Davie Street, between Weld and Stafford

Streets. —Decided to meet the Department’s request. From Mr. John Stewart asking that his interests in Municipal Reserve No. 540, Rolleston Street, be 1 transferred to Mr. G. A. Adamson from April 1, 1940, and that Mr. Adamson be granted a 21-years’ lease under Section S (7) of the Public Bodies Leases Act, 1908.—Granted under usual conditions. From Mr. G. L. Shannon application for permission to sub-lease 1 M.E.R. 163 Lot 3 to Cyril Edward Cron from May 1, 1940. —Approved. From J. V. Conning, assistant, abattoirs, notifying that he has joined the N.Z.E.F., and had to proceed to military camp on the 15th inst., and that he ceased work on the ,14th diem— Leave of absence granted'. Arrangements suggested by Clerk approved. From the Hokitika Fire Board, advising that the Council’s contribution lor the year commencing on April 1, 1940, and ending on March 31, 1941, is £3Ol/12/6, payable in advance on the first days of April, July and October, 1940, and January 1941. —Approved. From the District Superintendent, Department of Agriculture, advising that the provision of a. suitable weighing machine at the abattoirs, where such a machine is at present not installed', should be undertaken, and asking to be advised of the present position.

From the Hokitika Aero Club advising' that it is the intention of the club to establish a Iqeal kindergarten, and subject to negotiations to open the school early next month. The proposal provides for the facility to be available free of charge to the public, but this point will depend upon many factors, and asking whether the Council supports the movement and; has any suggestions to. offer.—Council support the movement, but have ho suggestions to offer.. .

From the Westland County. Council, forwarding- copy of resolution passed at a. meeting of ; representatives of the Hokitika. Aerodrome., suggesting that the Government take over control of the Hokitika Aerodrome for the duration of. the war, and that as far as possible every consideration be given to the pioneer -work of the Hokitika Aero Club in any. future arrangements of the mahageirieht of the ground.—-Ap-proved. . - . .

Frohn the Hokitika Btisihesstnen’s Association—(l) Advising that their asdeiatioh has had an offer of a supply of eight or-ten wire rubbish baskets for. main streets at. cost price of 22/6 each, and asking whether the Council would be prepared to pay half the cost if they were produced.—Agreed (2) Drawing attention to the dumber of potholes in.the tar-sealing, and' asking

that they be properly sealed.—To be attended to as soon as possible. From S. P. Murtha, Hokitika, asking for a domestic water service connection to section 1577, Sewell Street north, and that the large depression on the street at the front of the section be filled in.—Referred to Works Committee to report. From A. R. Elcock, agent for A. H. Appleton, application to surrender lease of Lot 1 of Resereve 446, Hokitika, and in lieu thereof to grant a new lease with a perpetual right of renewal to Howard Janies Reynolds, of Waitaha, farmer. —Approved and granted.

From Secretary Westland Rugby Football Sub-Union —(1) Application for the use of Cass Square for the duration of the current football season. (2) Drawing attention to the track that crosses the playing area, and asking that as the track is in parts a definite danger, that it be returfed. (3) That the iron fire plug at the south-eastern corner of No. 1 playing field be covered’ with turf. —Agreed to be attended to. (4) Stating that the Union considers that some competent man should be in charge of the pavilion, boiler-house and conveniences during the football season, and that the Union would be glad to discuss the position with ,the Council, in an endeavour to reach an understanding which will be of mutual advantage.— The Town Clerk to make arrangements until the Reserves Committee make other arrangements. From the Hokitika peautfying Society, stating that the society has applied for approximately three men under Scheme 13, oh full subsidy, for the purpose of carrying out. certain works for beautifying the town, and asking whether the Council would] undertake the work of preparing the wages sheets and payment of the men and recover the disbursements from
