MEXICAN OIL DISPUTE

* ARBITRATION REJECTED

WASHINGTON, May 4. Mexico has sent a Note to the United, States rejecting the proposed arbitration in the oil dispute, on the grounds that arbitration would be inoperative since the oil firms have not yet proyed that they were denied justice in the Mexican courts.

Arrangements have been made for the Dutch authorities to look after British, interests in Mexico. Since diplomatic relations between Britain and Mexico were severed in 1938, following the expropriation of British oil interests, the Danish Legation had taken charge of British interests, but the Nazi invasion of Denmark made a change necessary.

The Minister for Food (Lord Woolton), speaking at Liverpool, said that it was his chief aim to secure for the poorest not only enough food; but food at prices which they could afford. “Our stocks of food are here; but I am not going to put them into consumption just because we have them. I am going, to the best of my ability, to preserve very ample stocks so that whatever happens to our ships or lines of communication the people of Britain will still be able to be fed adequately.” Britain’s supplies of wheat, he said, were assured, and her reserves were enormous.
