TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. April 20—-Napier Park. April 20—Waimate. April 20; 22—Marlborough. April 27—Waterley. April 27—South Canterbury. One to Note:: Homing was last away in the Novice Stakes at Oamaru on Saturday, and the- -Nightraid filly performed creditably to finish second. No Allowance:

The Invercargill apprentice W. F. Ellis steered his 31st winner when The Raker won at Oamaru on Thursday, and he is no 'longer eligible for an allowance. 1 Returned:

Royal Chief returned to the Dominion last week, and on the same boat was Mr. T. A. Duncan’s new stallion Christopher Robin.

Driver Fined: At the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, T. H. Gunning, driver of Lord Zetland in the Landon Trot, was fined £2 for smoking in the birdcage, and also on the track.

New Calling; The well-known hurdle and steeplechase rider, W. J. McDowell, has been appointed by the Manawatu Hunt officials to the position of huntsman recently vacated by J. J. Waller, who is now devoting all his time to the training of horses.

Slow Away: Royal Refrain, who but for a bad beginning would have gained a place in the Novice Stakes at Oamaru, is a five-year-old half-brother by . Lord Warden to Last Refrain, and races in the same interests. Good Prospects:

The Raker (by Croupier) and Midguard (by Valkyrian), double winners at Oamaru, are expected to go on to good classes, and may be good prospects to follow. Midguard is a halfbrother to Epris. The from Kippit Lee, and comes from the family that produced Arctic King, Pandava, Rabbi and Inflation.

Attracted Notice:

Nisi Prius, who paid double figures for a place at Oamaru on Saturday, is a two-year-old gelding by Solicitor General from Melleray, dam of Queen Dorothy, and although he was a good ■way from the second horse in the Novice Stakes, his display was encouraging.

The Allowance: The effort to ease Nightcalm by claiming a 71b. (allowance did not improve his chances in his recent races at Oamaru. Of course, it is recognised that appprentices have to learn, but let it be on horses not likely to be amongst 'the favourites.-—“Senti-nel.” M. Billington was the apprentice engaged for Nightcalm. At Takanini:

Five yearlings are sheltered in F. Smith’s Takanini stable, 'and all have been added to the list. In addition to the Cambria Park —Recipio and Cambria, Park —Llandovery youngsters, who are fully related to Bronwen and Llandaff respectively, there are the Vaals —Royal March, Phaleron Bay— Duckling, and Nightmarch—Praise geldings. The last-named trio are respectively half-brother to Royal Appellant and Lady Drake, and brother to Serenata. Kumara Club: At a meeting of the Kumara Racing Club, the secretary (Mr J. F. Gilbert) presented a report on the recent meeting, which showed a profit of approximately £2O, which members considered satisfactory in view of the experiences of other clubs on the Coast at Easter. Members expressed their annoyance at the action of traffic inspectors in holding up traffic at the gates on Easter Monday for the purpose of examining drivers’ licences. It was decided to invite members to visit the course with a view to suggesting and mapping out a scheme of improvements to the course and buildings. The following new members were elected: Messrs G. Hunt, Jnr., J. Hurren, Jnr., J. Baretta, H. Dowling, J. Martin.

Good “Buy”: When the Acre gelding Vonia Park was offered at 'auction last week one of the bidders was Mrs A. W. McDonald, the Awapuni trainer, and the ten-year-old was knocked down to her at 17 guineas. Seemingly, it is not intended to race the son of Hallowvonia, ■who was a useful performer in her day, for he was purchased for use as a show-ring horse on behalf of Mrs. H. B. Russell (nee Miss Clifford), of Canterbury, who originally owned; Rocket, runner-up in the New Zealand Cup in 1933. Even though he was not a success as a racing proposition, Vonia Park might well make good in the show-ring, for he is of goodly proportions and has an excellent carriage. As Mrs Russell was prepared to go 100 guineas for the horse selected by her commissioner, she appears to have made quite a good bargain.

For Auckland; Katene. has been sold to a patron of R. Dunn’s Hamilton stable, and he was sent north last week. Although he has failed to win a race this season, the Great Bingen stallion displayed marked promise earlier in his career, apd as he is still loosely handicapped, he will be given plenty of opportunities from now on. He has yet to win over two miles, but has been placed on several occasions and gives the impression that with racing he will develop into a high-class stayer. Probably his best performance to date was his third to Willowbank in the Winton Cup in which he registered 4.28 2-5 for the two mile journey, after being hopelessly out of it in the middle stages. Katene has not been an easy horse to get the best out of in a race, but he should not be troubled to improve on his present mark. His dam, Lady Marvin, has left others in Leeway, Ruru, Marvin Dillon, and Tonty Dillon. NELSON CONCLUDES. ft MEMORIAL TO SECOND INNINGS , NELSON, April 15. . 5 The Nelson Jockey Club’s meeting was concluded in wet weather. This affected the attendance and the track became slow by the end of the day. The totalisator handled £6,479, against £7,293 last year. Time 1.29. ■ * Trotting MEETINGS TO COME April 17, 20—Wellington. April 27—Auckland. April 27—Westland. Leading Trainer: The Te Rapa trainer, M. Stewart, is the most successful trainer in the North island this season, having Avon 20 races, while F. J. Smith is second with 14. Arietta: Among the novices engaged at Hutt Park to-morrow, one that might attract attention is Arietta, by Nelson Derby from a good mare in Queen’s Own. Arietta, is one of O. E. Hooper’s team, and he rarely bothers with bad propositions. Well-Bred Novice: Mortlake, a novice engaged at Wellington to-morrow, is one of J. Pringle’s team at Addington, and good reports are to hand regarding his progress. He is a three-year-old halforother by Jack Potts to Windsor Lass, the pair being out of the Logan Pointer mare Rose Logan, a useful performer a decade or so ago. She comes from a fine winning family, for her dam Rosalie produced Master Ando. Rose Ando and Audalie, among other winners.

Haughty: Haughty, engaged at Hutt Park tomorrow. is an unraced novice four-year-old mare by the Auckland Cup winner Nelson Derby, from the Happy Voyage mare Regal Voyage (4.19 4-5), who ranks as a half-sister to Tinker and Belfast Jack. Other good winners figuring in this family are Thixendale, Denver City and Glimpse (dam of Royal Silk, Gold Paper and Royal Thread). Haughty is owned and trained by B. Grice, at Hinds, and he has few moderates in his stable. Has Been Placed: Cynic has not'' been seen out for over six months, but she has previously been placed in maiden class at Hutt Park, and she should now bebenefited by the patient policy pursued with her. She is a half-sister by Giro to Ironside, botli being out of the Logan Pointer mare Gatwick, a daughter of Precision. She is owned, and trained by E. J. Smith, who has Sea Gift and Bush Laddie, and she will be racing at Hutt Park tomorrow.
