ITALIAN FLEET

EARLIER MANOEUVRES

[by CABLE —PRESS ASSN.—COPYRIGHT.]

HOME, April 15.

Several weeks earlier than usual, the Italian naval manoeuvres have begun, including exercises for cutting off the Adriatic. It has been authoritatively denied that the manoeuvres include Tunisia, but it is stated that they cover a bigger, area of the Mediterranean than was expected. Later it was explained that the manoeuvres were not provocative but merely part of Italy’s preparedness. ANTLALLIES’ PRESS. LONDON, April 14.

Contrasting with the jubilation of the French reaction to the Narvik exploit, the Italian newspapers maintain the anti-British trend of. their recent comments. The British communiques are faithfully reproduced but the Press 1 quotes 1 extracts from London and Paris newspapers, attempting to show that the Allies admit. defeat. A British Official Wireless message says that currency has also been given in the Italian Press to a report that because of the German invasion of Norway and the occupation of Denmark there is a. grave shortage of food in Britain. It was added that it had become necessary immediately to ration butter, eggs, and margarine. The facts are that the butter ration was increased about a fortnight ago to eight a week a person, and, as already announced, it was officially stated immediately after Denmark was occupied that there was no intention of reducing the ratton. Margarine is not rationed, and there is no intention of rationing it. Eggs, which at present are cheaper than they have been for some time past, are not rationed and there is no intention of rationing them. Since April 9 pork has been free of ration.
