GERMAN BRUTALITY

LEGATION STAFFS ILL-TREATED [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, April 15. The diplomatic party have arrived at Brussels from Denmark, as wirelessed yesterday. They disclosed that the Germans invading Denmark flagrantly ignored diplomatic usage, broke into the British Legation at Copenhagen, and seized the British Minister, Sir Howard Smith and his whole staff, who were herded into two open brewers’ drays, wherein they were rushed to Kastell to prison. The legation secretary, Mr. F. Everington Smith, who protested, claiming diplomatic immunity, was seized and handcuffed.

A legation official, interviewed by the “Daily Mail’s” Hague correspondent, said: “We looked for all the world like aristocrats being carted in the tumbrils to the guillotine.” FATHER MARTINDALE. (Recd. April 16, 1.20 p.m.) LONDON, April 15. Members of the Legation from Copenhagen, who, with Consular officials from Denmark, have arrived in England, say that many Britons remain in Denmark, including Father Martindale. The Legation asked permission to bring Father Martindale, but the Nazis refused.
