COUNCIL OF DEFENCE
MR. FRASER’S EXPLANATION
[PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, April 15
Commenting on remarks by Hon. W. E. Barnard concerning the Council of Defence, the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) said that Mr. J. A. Lee and Mr. Barnard were co-opted to the council by Mr. Savage. F? : After .the ipersonal attack on Mr. Savage last December, and the subsequent action taken by the Cabinet, Mr. Savage considered it impossible to continue to held meetings; but the work of the council was carried out by the Ministers directly associated with war activities meeting in frequent consultation with the chiefs of staff. Subsequent events amply justified the Prime Minister’s action. “I propose,” said 1 Mr. Fraser, “to take no further serious notice of Mr; Barnard’s as apparently he is under the impression that everybody in the Labour Party is out '.of step but himself.”
