WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD

HOKITIKA, March 19

At the monthly meeting of the Westland Hospital Board, the chairman, Mr. E. W. Heenan, presided over the following members:- Messrs A. Dale, G. Heinz, J. Fox, J. L. Turner, L. W. Duff, J. A. Murdoch, W. A. Jamieson and A. R. Elcock. An apology for absence was received from Mr. G. H. Chapman. Recepts totalled £1123/4/1, and expenditure £2179/6/6. Accounts amounting to £1796/11/4 were passed for payment. The acting-Matron’s report for February was as follows: The highest number of 'patients on any one day was 77, the lowest 47, and the average for the month 66. Number of operations 44, X-rays 55, massage and physiotheraphy treatments 150, number of screenings 4. Miss M. E. Anderson, Sister Fowler, Nurses Taylor and Kennedy are on holidays. Holidays tire due to Sisters McCallum and Revell and Miss M. Harris. Sister Steadman resigned on February 29. Misses H. Hilliary and R. Dent ' commenced as wardsmaids. Misses E. McVicar, Kenning and M. Martin and Miss M. Knapp resigned. Miss E. Moriarty returned from leave.

The Medical Superintendent reported: Remaining in hospital January 31 76, admitted during February 63, total treated for the month 139, remaining in hospital February 29, 49. Farm Manager’s report: For February approximately 725 gallons of milk and 225 pints of cream was' supplied to the hospital; also 144 dozen eggs, 26 cockerels and various vegetables. Eight pigs were sold, one for the hospital, two to the local butcher, and five to the Addington market. Once again wet weather has retarded things generally, but fence repairs have been carried out. Two paddofeks of hay are about ready to cart in. The following produce was sold to the hospital for the month: Milk 725 gallons £63/8/9, cream, (225 pints) £7/13/9, pigs sold (8) £33/19/11, eggs <144 dozen) £l4 8/-, vegetables (1762 lbs.) £B/18/-, cockerels (26) £l/6/-. Total £129. 14/5. ' - , It was resolved to,request the local doctors to give special consideration to country patients, as the time question was generally more important to them than the townspeople. A vote of appreciation was made to Sister McCallum, who had resigned from the Institution after several years of faithful service. The matetr of tar-sealing or concreting paths was referred to the House Committee. I Mr. Heinz was authorised to see! that the painting of roofs at the hospi-l tai proceeded without delay. Several small requisitions recommended by the House Committee were authorised.

Staff Nurses Inder, Grenop, and Clausen were appointed Junior Sisters as from April 1. It was resolved to send letters of appreciation to the Shaw Savill and Albion Shipping Company and theowners of the M.V. Hokitika, for the free carriage of the “iron lung” presented to the Institution by Lord Nuffield.

It was decided to have the Board’s photographs taken and framed, for Centenary year. A minimum scale of salaries for the nursing staff, suggested by the Hospital Boards’ Association, was referred to the town members, for a report. Sister E. Mence advised that she was vacating the cottage at Waiho.4— It was decided that inquiries regarding the title be made, a report to be submitted to the next meeting.

The Kumara Medical Association and the Mayor of Kumara wrote, protesting against the. sale of the doctor’s residence at Kumara.- —Referred to the chairman.

In reply to a further letter from the Kumara Medical Association, it was decided to advise that the matter of a doctor for Kumara was receiving sympathetic consideration, and, if the Medical Association would arrange a meeting with the Social Security Department, the Board would attend.
