HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, March 19. The Mayor, Mr G. A. Pekry, presided over the following Councillors, J. L. Turner, G. Heinz, C. Caliari, D. P. Stuart, J. Fox, at last evening’s meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. F. D. E. Freitas, ML 11. Stopforth, H. T. Parry, A. R. Elcock. The financial statement showed, receipts £1429/5/9, expenditure £1523 3/11. Accounts amounting to £1155 1/10 were passed for payment. The Abattoir’s report stated: Stock slaughtered for the month of February amounted to 56 cows, 40 heifers, 43 bullocks, 303 sheep, 138 lambs and 13 pigs. Condemned, one bullock. Fees collected amounted to £B6/5/-, compared with £B2/0/6 for the corresponding month last year.

INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From the N.Z. Refrigerating Co., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika Abattoir area during the . month of February, 1940, viz: 38 sheep, 7 lambs. From Mr H. Kortegast complaining of flooding of his property in Rolleston Street and asking that footpath be raised from Mrs Mcßeath’s to Mr J. E. Ward’s.—Referred to Works 1 Committee with power to act. From Mr Hugh Preston. Brittan Street, asking that the open drain along his frontage be cleared of growth. —Approved. From the secretary, Hokitika Harbour Board, pointing out that the road leading to the tip is in a bad state of repair and asking that it be attended to. —Already attended to. From the Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, asking on behalf of. the Town-planning Board what progress is made to date 1 for the preparation of town-planning schemes under the Town-planning Act, 1926, and pointing out that as the Hokitika Borough Council is one of the authority under statutory obligation to prepare a town-planning scheme it is desired to know how far the matter has progressed. —Consideration deferred to next meeting.

From the Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, forwarding Ministerial authority under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act, 1937, for the Westland County and Hokitika Borcugh, viz: J. A. Murdoch (representing the Westland County Council), D. F. E. Freitas, G. A. Perry, W. H. A. Stopforth (representing the Hokitika Borough Council), G. Coles, E. AV. Heenan. J. G. Johnston, J. C. E. McCluskey, Miss O. M. F. Stapleton, and drawing attention to Section 9 of the Act, which provides for reviewing existing facilities for physical training, exercise, sports and recreation. —Referred to committee.

Mr F. J. Wallace and others-, asking that the roadway in Hall Street, north of Park Street, be formed, as at present there is only a. footpath and the carts are close up to the. fences when using the footpath, which is dangerous for children. —Works Committee to inspect.

The Medical Officer of Health, asking that the Council give urgent consideration to the provision of necessary conveniences in Cass Square 1 , and asking to be informed of Council’s decision.—Referred to Reserves Committee.

District Engineer, Public Works', stating that in respect of exemption of both sides of Revell Street from the provisions of Section 128 of the Public Works Act, 1928, that it will be necessary for the Council to supply duplicate tracings on linen showing the portions of the street required to be exempted.—Referred to Town Clerk to act.

Mr W. Kirwan, offering to fell and remove trees in Cass Square for £1 per tree, provided that he is allowed to retain the timber.—Offer accepted, to start with Stafford Street, one at a time.

(Secretary, R.S.A., Hokitika, asking that the two German guns in front of the Government Buildings, Hokitika, be painted, as it is understood that the guns were presented to the town at the conclusion of the Great WarGranted.

Secretary, R.S.A., Hokitika, application for permission to hold a concert in the Regent Theatre on Anzac night, with the right to make a charge, for admission. —Agreed. Mrs M. Trotter, Sewell Street North, asking that the growth be cleared off •Sewell Street on the north side of Tudor Street, and also that the footpath be metalled. —Referred to Works Committee.

Hon. Secretary, Hokitika Beautifying Society, asking for loan of Council’s grass-cutter and roller, and stating that a member of the committee, who has had experience with such equipment, will be in charge and every care will be taken. —Approved.

Ci’. Turner complained of the way tar-sealing and repairing was carried out. Other Councillors agreed that certain sections were a disgrace. Some of the things the staff had done in connection with the streets were ridiculous. The work would have to be done much better in the future if it were to be any good. A scheme for tar-sealing footpaths, proposed by Mr Lionel Graham, at a 50/50 cost with the Council and residents concerned, was considered and referred to the Works Committee with power to act. HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. , HOKITIKA, March. 19. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika School Committee was held last evening. Present; Messrs A. C. Armstrong (chairman), H. W, R. Sweney, W. E. Richards, R. J. Pedder, A. Leslie, Rev. M. Feist. The Minister of Public Works and the Minister of Labour wrote stating that further work has been authorised to. complete the conditioning of the school grounds. —Resolved that the Ministers be thanked. In connection with the short supply of milk at the school it was said by the suppliers that it was owing to the shortage of bottles milk was curtailed, but on a further supply of bottles, being obtained the full supply will be sent. It was resolved that a letter be sent to Mr E. R. Ferguson, thanking him for his work as secretary, and expressing appreciation on his having enlisted. Accounts aggregating £ 22/13/4 were passed for payment. The headmaster’s report gave attendances: Primary 151 boys, 130 girls, total 287; secondary, GO boys, G 5 girls, total 125. The attendance has been much better. The grounds have been topdressed by the Public Works Department and sown. The school, was

visited by Messrs. Learning and Noble, High School Inspectors, The. evening classes are not as good this year and if there is no improvement they will have to be discontinued. Information respecting school baths is welcomed. The school swimming sports will be held this, week. The Committee resolved to leave the matter of school baths over for consideration as the season is well advanced. It was resolved to have a barrow and axe procured for the caretaker. It was resolved to ask the headmaster to point out to the children the danger of playing marbles on the roads. ; „ . ■
