SCHOOL “HEADS” HOMELESS

HOUS ES C OMM AN DEE R ED. LONDON. January 6. The headmasters of two , leading English public schools are homeless —Mr John. Bell of Cheltenham College, and Mr H. C. A. Gaunt, of Malvern College. The Government have commandeered their houses, and even their furniture is now locked away from. them. “I speak as a homeless wanderer over the face of the earth.” said Mr Bell this week. “My house has been taken for the use of a very important person who has not yet arrived. I’m not allowed tc touch my furniture until the end of the war. Even su,ch liquid refreshment which I had laid in has been sealed up to await a valuer, in remote parts of the cellar. Cheltenham College was evacuated to Shrewsbury at the beginning of the war. All our buildings were commandeered by the Government. I was able to take my clothes, papers and books away with me, but all the rest of my family’s worldly goods are there, locked up in two rooms.” West from Cheltenham and across the River Severn the house of Mr H. C. A. Gaunt and others normally part of Malvern College have also been commandeered.
