HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, December 19. The Hokitika Borough Council met iast evening; present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. J. L. Turner, J. Fox, D. P. Stuart, C. Callari. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. H. T. Parry, G. Heinz, F. D. E. Freitas, W. H. Stopforth and A. R. Elcock. Receipts were shown at £338/9/10, and expenditure £1637/11/4. Accounts amounting to £1029/12/5 were passed for payment. The abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered for the month of November amounted to 24 cows, 22 heifers, 67 bullocks, 285 sheep, 12 pigs, 3 calves. Condemned, nil. Fees collected for month £6O/14/-, compared with £6B/19/6 for the same month last year.

It was decided to call tenders for the repairing and painting of the abattoir manager’s house and .the cemetery sexton’s residence. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From the General Manager, Kanie'i Electric Ltd., advising as follows: “Since our meeting of September 25, at which light, heat and power rates were discussed for the ensuing ten yearly period, we have been givingfurther consideration to the matter of rate reductions in the hope that some way may be found to reduce the cost of electricity to the Hokitika consumers. We are now glad to advise that all meter rental charges will be abolished, beginning with January, 1940. December energy accounts payable in January will be .the last accounts to include meter rents. At your convenience, kindly have the Borough Council advise us by letter if the above reduction will b e approved, in order that we may take the necessary steps for putting same into effect next month.” —Offer accepted, and letter of appreciation to be sent to the company. From the Postmaster, Hokitika, appealing on behalf of the Children’s Camp Committee for donations, as owing to,the increase in posgfee rates for war purposes the sale Health Stamps is not meeting with Recess, and to meet the expenditure incurred in sending 30 or 40 children to the Health Camps, cash donations are solicited. — £2/2/- donation granted. From Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, Medical Officer of Health, advising that he has relinquished control of the West Coast Health District from December 1, and that Dr. K. J. H. Davies will be Medical Officer of Health for the Westland Health District. Dr. Telford expressed his thanks and appreciation of the co-operation and manycourtesies which he has received from this Council during the many years he has been’in charge of this Health District. —Letter of appreciation to be sent to Dr. Telford.

From the N.Z. Refrigerating Co., Ltd., advising mat the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika Abattoir during the month of November, 1939: 180 sheep, 9 lambs, 1 pig-

From the Canterbury Employers’ Association, Christchurch, forwarding copy of an amendment to the 5.1.L.8. Workers (Urban Sec.) Award fixing the minimum rate for all labourers and other similar workers as £4/12/6 for weekly workers, and 2/4 an houi 1 for hourly workers. From Mr. J. S. Chapman, application for permission to instal a septic tank on Section 1058, Livingstone Street. —Declined owing to. proximity to pumping station. From Mr. E. T. Stoop, stating that he is erecting a dwelling on -Lot 2 of Sections 1031-1032, and asking that an open drain be formed along the frontage of the property between Hoffman Street and Livingstone Street, as far as the fall will permit, and also that the growth be cleared off the street. Mr. Stoop points out that the front peg of the section is about Bft. inside the present fence at the Livingstone Street corner. —Granted temporarily. Also an application for permission to instal a septic tank on Lot 2 of Sections 1031-1032, Stafford Street, near Livingstone Street. —Declined, owing to proximity to pumping station. From the secretary, Hokitika Beautifying Association, tendering thanks for the generous supply of spoil made available for the riverside area.

From the secretary, Hokitika Business Men’s Association, again urging the Council to consider provisions for building bylaws and endeavouring to do the numbering of houses, and offering to co-operate in these matters. —To be considered when estimates considered. From Alex. Broome, application for refund of billiard room license £3, as the billiard room is now closed. — Agreed.

From the Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, advising that as bulk supplies of arecoline hydrobromide will not be to hand until early in the New Year, the Dogs’ Registration Emergency Regulations have been issued extending the life of existing regulations until February 1, 1940.

From Mr. Kilkeary stating that he desires to open an amusement parlour for a week in a shop in Revell Street, and asking what license fee will be charged.— £2/10/- fee. From the Commissioner of Transport, advising that Air Travel (N.Z.) Ltd. have applied for a renewal of their continuous aircraft service license for the route Inchbonnie, Hokitika or Greymouth, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers and Haast and Okuru, also, between Greymouth, Westport and Nelson, and asking whether the Council has any representations to make. —No objection. From the hon. secretary, Westland Provincial Patriotic Council, stating that his Council has resolved to collect £3OO from the local bodies in the Westland provincial area, that the allocation is based on the population of the respective districts, and that the contribution for the Borough of Hokitika is £27/7/-.—Agreed and passed.

From Mr. Theo. Foote, asking under what terms the Council will extend the water supply to the boundary of his section on North Gibson Quay.—Terms £2 per year. From the manager. Bank of New Zealand. From the Director of Housing Construction advising that in regard to the Council’s tender for the reading and servicing of Government Housing Reserve No. 445, that monetary authority for £1397 has been obtained and that the Council can now proceed to carry out all the work in the specification and tender.
