BRITISH BY-ELECTION [PBESB ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] LONDON, December 10. In the Stretford division of Laneajj shire by-election, as a result of the death of Mr. A. C. Crossley in a flying accident, the result was: —. Ralph Etherton (Conservative) 23,408 R. Edward (Ind. Lab.) .. 4,424 E. Gower (Communist) .. 1,519 Majority for Etherton 18,894. Thirty-six per cent, of the electorate voted. In the previous election for the seat the result was: A. C. Crossley (Con.) .34,87’1, T. Myres (Lab.) 19,278; majority for Crossley 15,596. LABOUR PARTY’S ATTITUDE - LONDON, December 10. Mr. Attlee, .in a.speech, said? Labour has made a truce regarding byelections, but distrusts the Government’s ability to organise the country in this struggle, or to make a satisfactory peace. COMMUNIST PLOT ALLEGED. RIO DE JANEIRO, December 10. The police, claiming the existence of a Communist plot to undermine the armed forces, have arrested 100 persons, including a former deputy, and minor army and navy offic.er, and seized quantities of arms and ammunition. FAIR TO RE-OPEN. SAN FRANCISCO, December 10. 'The Golden Gate fair will reopen on May 18 on a plan acceptable to the creditors. COLLISION IN IRISH SEA. RUGBY, December 10. The L.M.S. ' railway passenger steamer Duke of Lancaster was damaged by a collision early this morning, in the Irish Sea, with the cargo vessel Fire King.' The crew of 10 of the latter ship were transferred to the Duke of Lancaster, one of them being injured. PERSECUTION OF JEWS. LONDON, December 10. A message from Berlin, says that a decree has been issued, which forbids Jews in Germany to buy new clothes or darning wool to mend old ones, or leather to mend shoes. Jews in Danzig have been ordered to leave before December 31.
