MAGISTRATE’S COURT

TO-DAY’S GREYMOUTH CASES. Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M., presided at to-day’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth. Senior-Sergeant G. Bonisch represented the police. Five statutory first offenders found on licensed premises after hours, were each fined 5/-, with 10/- costs. Robert McCarroll, who did not appear, was fined 10/-, with 10/- costs, on a charge of disorderly behaviour. Constable Scanlan said that on November 5, he saw defendant catch hold of a railway sign in Whall Street and bend both ends round. Senior-Sergeant Bonisch said that no damage was done to the sign, it having to be just straightened out. The S.M.: Just a silly prank, I suppose. For failing to produce warrants of fitness for motor-vehicles, John Joseph Brown, William Edgar Arnold Rowe, William Henry Malpass, and Roderick James Mathieson were each fined 10/-, with 10/- costs. For a similar offence, Clement Roper was fined 5/-, with 10/costs.

Leslie Walker Stanton a,nd John E. H. Smith were each fined 10/-, with 10/- costs, for cycling at night without lights. Ronald Chisholm, who made a voluntary appearance, was fined 10/-, with 3/- costs, for driving a motor-car displaying only one headlight. An application by County Traffic Inspector Sloss to withdraw an information relating to riding a cycle at night without a light, as the defendant had left to take up military service, was granted. Charged with disobedience of a maintenance order made at Christchurch on August 16, 1937, for the payment of 4/- per week towards the maintenance of his son, the arrears to October 30 being £9/16/-, Percy A. Wil ; . Hams was sentenced to ten days' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended as long as defendant pays current maintenance and 5/- per week off the arrears, the first payment to be made on November 27.
