STATE ELECTIONS

CAMPAIGN IN U.S.A

(by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]

NEW YORK, November 6.

The State and Municipal Elections will be held throughout the nation tomorrow. The results may indicate the probable political trends during the coming year. The polling in California and in Ohio will provide a cross-section of the national sentiment regarding social legislation, as both of these States are sponsoring radical pension plans.

The Californian pension plan promises 30 dollars monthly to the unemployed who are over 50 years of age. The pension plan in Ohio promises 50 dollars per month to unemployed who are over 50 years old. The Californian plan is similar to that which was defeated in the State last year by 200,000 votes in a- 2,000,000 poll. It is based on remnants, of Upton Sinclair’s and Epic Townsend’s pension plan, but both Townsend and Upton Sinclair are opposing it. Nevertheless there is a highly-organised campaign for it, and this has caused fears that it might be carried, despite there being assurances that it would be economically impracticable and would be ruinous to the State.
