Jones, British Resident at Selangor, has been appointed Colonial Secretary to the Straits Settlement, on the forthcoming retirement of Sir Alexander Mall.

The death occurred suddenly, last evening, at his residence, Carroll Street, Runanga, of Mr. Hugh. Joseph McConnell, ivho had conducted a drapers’ business in Runanga from the early days of that township. A native of Victoria, aged 77 years, deceased came to New Zealand at the age of seven years. He resided in Westport until 1908 and for the past 31 years had lived in Runanga. He had been a Justice of the Peace since 1919. and was a member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge. He is survived by his wife, one brother. Mr. McConnell (Wellington) and three sisters, Mesdames M. A. Mears (Westport), and Lenihan (Auckland), and Miss C. McConnell (Westport). The funeral will take place on Thursday morning, at Karoro Cemetery.
