TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

NEW ZEALAND CUP

YOURS TRULY‘9 SUCCESS,

BEAULIVRE wins stewards

CHRISTCHURCH, November 4. The New Zealand Cup, decided at the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s metropolitan meeting at Riccarton to-day, was. won decisively by the second choice. Yours Truly, bred and owiled by Mr. J. S. McLeod, of Hastings, president'of the New Zealand Racihg Conference, and a breeder and owner of thoroughbreds for many years past. The favourite, Royal Chief, was affected by the fast pace set .from the outset, and was not at all well placed during the middle stages, and although he finished creditably into fourth place, he was never really likely. Beaulivre, a staunch first choice for the Stewards Handicap, ran away from his pursuers in the last furlong, and had one ot the easiest wins for many years. His task with 8.10 for a three>year-old was considered in many circles to be difficult, especially as- the highest weights previously carried to victory by horses of this age were 8.9 by Machine Gun in 1903, and 8.6 by Bon Reve when he ran a dead-heat with Stardancer m 1912. He-, however, showed that the was not onlv capable of breaking the long spell, but of winning without any pressure and with a, good deal in hand. The track was in excellent order, a light rain in the early morning having little if any effect on- the going, which was fast. The attendance was large, but probably not up to last year’s figures, and visitors' were present from all parts 1 of New Zealand. The sum of £71,512 (win £30,166, Place £41,396) was handled, against £70.266 10/- on New Zealand Cup day last year, an increase of £1275/10/-. Results: — ... FUNDY BAY’S HURDLES

[SPECIAL TO “STAR.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, November 4. Funcly Bav opened his winning account in the Spring Hurdles after making the pace early with Jewish Lad outstaying Dividend trom the last fence. Dividend assumed charge before the straight, but tired in the last furlong. Jewish Lad held on t’oi poor third, but Dorado spoiled his chance with bad jumping, and so did Esperance Bay. Silver River fell. Hot Favourite Beaten: The Spring Plate was regarded as such a good thing lor Sternchase' that he carried five times the support entrusted to Moorsotis, the next best fancied, but, after being one of the first to begin, he failed lamentably and finished only a moderate fifth. It was not his form. Nigger Boy and Dinah Dhu were soon making the pace, with Authoress' and Moorsotis moving up in the straight. Authoress wore down Nigger Boy, but she was beaten herself in the last fifty yards by Moorsotis. Great Swoop came homo resolutely out on the track to cut Nigger Boy out of third. Duncannon Wins: Duncannon, though suffering a bad bump shortly after the start, overcame the setback in the Linwood Handicap, and he came through along the fence below the false rail to have the issue quickly settled. Duncannon was ac-

finally first out, but lie was soon passed by Combat, Phenomenal, Lockit, and ' Montessa. Approaching the straight, Flame Queen moved round the outer and beat. Combat for second, Lockit being fourth, and then came Asia, Montessa and Verey Lights. Raeburn was never dangerous. A Great Performance:

A record field contested the New Zealand Cup, and for the first time in history it was won by a horse owned by the president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, Yours Truly justifying all forecasts that he could stay two miles. Though drawn at No. 12, he was soon well placed in. the running, and after half a mile Second Innings had charge, from Lady Furst, Mishna, Wagner, Peerless, Centrepoise, and Yours Truly, and except that Capricious was taken up to the leader at the seven furlongs, the positions did not vary much- Yours Truly commenced his claim at the three furlongs and assumed Charge at the false rail, and then stalled off all challenges. Capricious came, on again for second, wi’tll. Dictate and Royal Chief outstaying the others. The best of the rest were Mishna, Wagner, Ned Cuttie, The [Wrecker and Hunting Cat,' Lowenberg broke a fetlock and was destroyed. | Yours Truly was always .well placed-, and was excellently Jiandled by the Hastings apprentice, W. Mudford, who has had a remarkable run iof successes this season, Capricious put up a. sterling and Dictate added another tb his long list of minor placingS' in important events. Royal Chief was not well'placed turning for home, but had a good run in the straight. He, however, failed to get to the leaders, although he made up a lot of ground in the last two furlongs. Second Innings carried on as pacemaker for a long way and was mainly responsible for the good time recorded, which was only one-fifth of a second outside Palantua’s race record in 1933. It is some years since the first half mile of a two mile journey was covered in 49 3-ssec, ancT the last half mile occupied similar figures. For riding Yours Truly, W. J. Mudford, a nj-yeSr-dl'd apprentice, earned £B4", or just a fraction^over_ 5/7 a second; and also a present fro'm the owner, Mr. J. S. McLeod: Doria Wins Stakes.:

South. Island form proved too gobfl' in the Welcome Stakes, for Avhich Enrich Avas a red-hot favourite.-. Doria and' Miss Hallbmet led Enrich and •Don’t Forget to the; course proper, where Doria drew away and Avon by Lavo lengths from Don’t Forget, who' li eld Enrich at bay all the Avay doAvn the straight. Miss Hallomet and Shikari Avere the best of the others. Surprise Win: The Apprentices’ Handicap produced a fine finish Avith Merry March coming through in the last furlong to hold off the fast-finishing Sir Amyas; avlio made up a lot of ground 'over the last tAVO furlongs., Night Pal also came home resolutely, but Auctor, after looking a winner at the distance; stopped to fourth. Anita Foe Avas not sighted early, but Avas right up fifth. Beaulivre Easily:

Beaulivre simply outclassed the rest bf the field in the SteAvards’ Handicap Avhen he came from third place at the false rail to Avin very easily. It Avas his ninth Avin on end, and seventh consecutive victory since being purchased by Mr. E. C. Harnett. Sleeveless came home solidly after being badly placed early, and Dark Flight ran a great race for a hack performer. Rakahanga, Paper Slipper (fourth), Density, and Nightcalm failed to run on, while Globe Trotter and Strip were never sighted. Wardress Unlucky: Baran Avas a slightly better favourite than Wardress in the Riccarton Handicap, but Avhile the former made a bold attempt to win, Wardress had her chance ruined by being squeezed back at the start, and being placed in almost a hopeless position from the outset. Master Dingle and Rebel Lad also got into trouble at the jump off, and lost a lot of ground. At the end of two furlongs, Trench Fight shoAved lout from Swordstick, Baran, Sovereign Lady, Dainty Sue 1 and Lady Montana, and turning for home Trench Fight and Baran ‘ raced abreast in front of Sovereign Lady, Swordstick, Lady Montana and Wardress. The run home had not long been in progress before Lady Montana drew past the tAvo leaders and Sovereign Lady put in a claim. Lady Montana carried on with a telling run, and ran home an easy winner. In a close tussle for second money, Sovereign Lady just failed to get up to Baran. Norseman was a close fourth, and Avas folloAved by Wardress, SAvordstick, Queen of Song and Queen Dorothy. Lady Montana shoAved a big improvement on her Trentham form, and also on her final gallop at Riccarton. Baran’s effort Avas a satisfactory Derby trial, and he should race Avell in to-day’s classic. Sovereign Lady ( finished strongly, and Avould have been • second in another stride. Wardress • executed a sterling effort after her unfortunate beginning, and but for this Avould undoubtedly have- added much • interest to the concluding stages.

READING WINS DERBY. CATA LOGUE SUCCESSFUL MELBOURNE. November 4. Taking the lead a furlong and a-half after the start, Reading never surrendered his control of the Victoria Derby. which, with the Cantala Stakes, provided the feature of the first day . of the Victoria Racing Club’s meeting at, Flemington to-day. High Caste came with a determined challenge in ■ the straight and gained on the leader. . but Reading never looked to he a loser. Dashing Cavalier, after running second most of the way, finished a surprising third. Beau Vite and Wilson, nearest to the placed horses, ■struggled gamely but were never really dangerous. Gold Salute was a

great disappointment, being lasi borne. Reading’s rider, D. Munro, won the Derby previously on Hall Mark and Nuffield. Reading is the seventh colt io win the Sydney and Victoria Derbies in the one season in the last. 10 years. Manrico led over the last seven furlongs for an untroubled win in the Cantala Stakes. He has had five wins and a third in his last six staits. Landlaw put up a game effort but had no hope with the winner. Carpentier was a moderate third. Te Hero, after being troublesome at the start, got away fairly, but was never dangerous.’ Crojick ran poorly. The race was run in heavy rain, and Manrico did exceptionally well to record 1.375 for a mile.

Catalogue outclassed his rivals in the Hotham Handicap, in which he led always, and enhanced the prospects of his second Melbourne Cup success. Pantier and Beil Buoy finished well, but had no hope against the winner. Ndtlierlea and The Trump ran poor races.

The Wakeful Stakes saw an exciting finish, in which Snow White, after a good staying performance, won in the last stride. Riviera finished well. Dreamsbfiie.fiad every show. Broadcaster made amends for recent failures to win tlie Maribyrnong Plate. If was an excellent effort, as Broadcaster was slow away. Halifax ran a good race from an outside barrier position. Goldsmith had every show. Happy Bag established a good lead early, but weakened. Trueness, who finished fifth, was responsible for a good effort. The winner cost 450 guineas as a yearling. Ortelle’s Star upset calculations by leading practically always- in the Mackinnon Stakes. A muddling pace early spoilt the. race. Feminist, after lying second most of the way, had no chance against Ortelle’s Star in the closing stages. Respirator and Moisaic finished well without ever looking dangerous. Mosaic’s form disappointed his cup- admirers, but he was not suited by the manner in .which tile race was run, and should do better in the Cup, when the pace is likely to be solid throughout. Sectional times in the Derby were: First half 55sec, first mile Imin 43sec; in the Mackinnon Stakes, first half 55sec, last half 49$sec. Beau Vite’s trainer, T. R. George, has not given up hope of success in the Cup. He states the colt was interfered with at a critical stage in tlie Derby, blit finished gamely. He will appreciate a drop in the weights. Catalogue’s party is sanguine of success. Catalogue looks a better horse than last year and the possibility of heavy going will enhance his chance.

The Aveather was dull and threatening. There Avas a good attendance. Results: —

Victoria Derby, one mile and a-half: Reading 8.10 (D. Munro) 1; High Caste (N.Z.) 2; Dashing Cavalier 3. Eleven started. A length; tAvo and ahalf lengths. Beau Vite was fourth. Time 2.33.

PRESS COMMENTS

SYDNEY, November 6

The “Sydney Morning Herald’s” Melbourne correspoiulent, commenting on the Derby says: Reading made his OAvn sound pace, and at no stage looked likely to be beaten- by his great rival, High Caste, Avhom he has beaten in six of their eleven meetings. Beau Vite did not run kindly in the- straight. Avhile Gold Salute Avas not in the- picture at all, and finished a long Avay back last.

The “Telegraph’s” Melbourne correspondent says: Reading’s brilliant win Avas planned bj r the jockey, Munro, a Aveek ago. The race- Avas run to suit Munro’s scheme of securing a break on the field at the half mile. Beau Vite could not come on. The- big disappointment, hoAvever, was Gold Salute. He Avas badly away, but never seemed able t-o- pass a horse. The “Telegraph,” commenting on the Hotham Handicap says: Catalogue amazed racegoers by leading all the Avay, and carrying 9.2 on a rain-sod-den track.
