SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS

OPPOSITION AMALGAMATION.

[BY CABLE —PBEBS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.]

CAPE TOWN, November 2. Dr. Malan, in a speech at Paarl, announced that negotiations are proceeding for the amalgamation of his Party and the ex-Premier, General Hertzog’s followers.

Dr. Malan stated that he is prepared to serve under General Hertzog’s leadership. “The Times” Cape Town correspondent points out that Dr. Malan is unlikely to have pledged himself to serve under General Hertzog without the latter giving him an assurance that he (General Hertzog) intended to continue actively to oppose General Smuts, the Prime Minister. Therefore,- it seems only a matter of time before' the parties of Dr. Malan and of General Hertzog will become a united Nationalist Party, whose ultimate object will be a South African Republic.

HERTZOG’S PRO-NAZI VIEWS.

(Received November 3, 12.20 p.m.) BLOEMFONTEIN, November 2. _ General Hertzog, in a speech, said the fact that South Africa sold produce to England was no reason to enter the war on England’s side. “Poor old Gerihany took £7,000,000 worth of the Union’s goods last year. Why should we not be like the Swiss and maintain neutrality in a war beyond our boundaries, and sell our products to whoever will take them?” ' The Free State Congress has appointed General Hertzog as a nominal leader. The constitution proclaims that the aims of the party are the attainment of a republic by constitutional means, and a ban on further Jewish immigration.

General Hertzog told the Congress that the allegation that Herr Hitler whs- out for world domination was rifdst-fnfamous lying propaganda.
