Mrs. H. Burns, of Wellington, and Miss Dulcie Thwaites, of Glenroy, arrived yesterday, to attend the Flem-ing-Baker wedding, to-morrow evening.

A London cablegram stated that the New Zealand Davis Cup player, Coombe, has enlisted in the New Zealand' anti-tank unit.

An Ottawa cablegram announced: It is officially stated that Mr. Charles J. Burchell, K.C., of Halifax, has been appointed High Commissioner to Australia.

At a meeting of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon, Mr. P. J- McLean (President) was appointed to represent the Chamber at the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce at Wellington on December 15.

The death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr. Thomas D. Marshall, who retired some months ago from the position of locomotive 1 foreman of the Southland district. Deceased joined the railways service in Christchurch in 1899, and for a period relieved at Greymouth as locomotive foreman.

The death has occurred at Morland homestead, near Masterton, of Mr. Orengard Horsley Beetham, a son of the late Mr. Hugh H. Beetham, and Mrs. Beetham, at the age of 53 years. He was a well-known sheep-breeder. He was born at Brancepeth, and served in the Great War in the artillery.— Press Assn.

Inspector T. Shanahan, of the Police Force, Timaru, has received notice of transfer to New Plymouth to succeed Inspector J. Powell, who has retired. Inspector Shanahan went to Timaru a little more than .four years ago frqm Dunedin. Previously he was a sub-in-spector in Auckland. He expects to take up his new appointment on November 19. He will be succeeded by Sub-Inspecor M. Flanagan, of Auckland City, who will take up duty at Timaru on November T 9 with the rank of inspector.

The wedding took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Tennent, Nelson Street, on Wednesday, of their third daughter, Agnes Isohel, and William Douglas McLeod, only son of Mr. and Mrs. George McLeod, of Mosgiel, Dunedin. Rev. A. D. Horwell officiated. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Molllyf Tennent as bridesmaid, and Alison Anderson as flower girl. Mr. P. A. Cleel, Christchurch was best man. Mr. and M?s. McLeod will make their home in Christchurch.

Mr. P. Sweetman, whose marriage will take place next week, was met last evening by officers of the West Coast Rugby League, and presented with a fireside chair and a radio stand. The presentation was made by the President, Mr. P. Blanchfield, who referred to Mr. Sweetman’s untiring efforts as a member of the Junior Advisory Board and also as secretary of the recent Queen Carnival Central Committee. Mr. Blanchfield and other members joined in extending best wishes.

The wedding took place on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church, Ahaura, of Clarice Mary, eldest daughter of Mr. and' Mrs. J. Martin, Ngahere, and Robert James, eldest son of Mr. and the late Mrs. McGrath, Kumara. Rev. Father Brown officiated Miss Mona McGrath, sister of the bridegroom was bridesmaid, and Mr. J. H. Martin, brother of the bride was best man. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Railway Hotel, Ngahere, where the bride’s mother received the guests. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. McGrath left later for Wellington. They will reside in Kumara.

Dr. L. R. Richardson, M.Sc., Ph.D. (McGill University, Montreal) has been appointed by the Victoria University College Council to the position of lecturer in zoology in place of Mr. C. E. Palmer, who recently resigned to take up an important position in the Government Meteorological . Department. Dr. Richardson is 28, and is at present demonstrator in zoology at McGill University. His interests are net limited to biological science, for he is president of McGill Flying Club, which owes its origin to him. He will arrive in New Zealand to take up his new appointment in time for the 1940 session.—Press Assn.

The death occurred at Greymouth this morning, following a lengthy illness, of Mr. Patrick McGirr, of Blaketown. A native of Armagh, Ireland aged 83 years, deceased came to Greymouth 60 years ago and had resided here since, being engaged in the baking business for many years. His wife predeceased him 13 years ago and he is survived' by three daughters and five sons. The, daughters are Mesdames P. Willis (Greymouth), J. Turner (Hokitika), and T. Cummings (Ross), and the sons, Denis (Cobden), Frank and Jack (Blaketown). Patrick (Auckland) and George (Greymouth. He also leaves two sisters Mesdames T”°on (Rotorua) and Burgess (Ashburton). The funeral will take place at Karoro Cemetery, on Sunday afternoon.
