TURKISH SECURITY

PURPOSE OF ALLIED PACT.

[by CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.]

(Recd. November 2, 11.45 a.m.) ANKARA, November 1.

“Turkey’s pact with Britain and France is not directed against any other State, and will only operate if some State seeks to trample our lawful aspirations,” declared General Ineunu, in opening the sixteenth session of Parliament. ■*

“Its purpose is to assure Turkey’s security, and to serve peace and international security, at least in the zone in which our influence can be exercised. We are endeavouring to create a region of security, to prevent the extension of the horrors of war. Our bonds with the Allies, and our common ideals with them, do not disturb normal friendly relations with other States. We sincerely desire to keep out from the zone of war, provided our security is not compromised and our undertakings are not violated.”

APPROVED BY IRAQ

(Recd. Nov. 2, 1.40 p.m.) LONDON, November 1.

“The Times’s” Baghdad correspondent states that the Regent, in his speech from the Throne, said that Iraq entirely approves the British, French, and Turkish pact, which had enabled the Middle East to regard the future confidently. Arab countries were wise in taking a stand for the liberty and independence of nations. He hoped that the action would help to realise their own nationalist aspirations.
