VICTORIA PARK TROTS

TO-MORROW’S ATTRACTIVE CARD THE FIELbS DISCUSSED . Excellent fields, well-balanced, and comprising good class horses will parade at Victoria Park to-morrow, for the opening day of one of the West Coast’s most popular sporting fixtures of the year, e Spring meeting of the Greymouth Trotting Club. Two _ special passenger trains will bring visitors from Christchurch to the meeting, and with all the leading Canterbury reinsmen in action, and the leading stables represented, there is every indication of a highly successful fixture.

The track is in ideal condition, as a result of improvements made during< the Winter, and provided the weather | is favourable, fast times should be re-: corded. Excellent arrangements have been piade for' the meeting, and patrons will Und the appointments all that can be desired. Special trains from Christchurch will bring numerous Canterbury visitors for the meeting. A train bringing horses and attendants left Christchurch at S a.m., to-day. A special passenger train will leave Christchurch at 10.40 o’clock to-night for Greymouth, arriving at 5.2 a.m., to-morrow, and another special passenger train will leave Christchurch at 6 a.m.,' to-morrow arriving at Greymouth at 11.36 a.m., in good time for the first race. i Small Change will not be a runner at. the meeting, having been scratched ' yesterday, for all engagements. There will be only two brackets: Replica ( and Pamelas, and Rollalong and ' Shadow Boy, in the Dash Handicap. ( The win-and-place system of betting will be in operation. ‘ Following is a review of the fields;. — - 12.15

INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, of £lO5, 2.27 rate. Eight furlongs and a-half. Dick Travis .. scr Spey Loyal .. seiFormality .. ser Wainoni .lack .. ser Johnnie’s Hope ser Wee Napoleon .. ser Cold Bar .. .. scr Lady Carol .. 1Lord Brent. .. scr Loyal Surprise 12 Sailor's Hornpipe scr Guy Whispers .. 21 Opening proceedings is the Introductory Handicap, a slow class mile, with 12 acceptors. Dick Travis, Formality (by Jack Potts from a useful mare, Erin’s Lynn), Johnnie’s Hope, Sailor’s Hornpipe, Wee Napoleon, Wainoni Jack, and Spey Royal have no performances on which to get a 'line on their chances. Spey Royal has previously shown speed, but did not race last season, and will be having his first start in J. Bryce’s hands. Gold Bar had three starts last season, and ran one third to Highland Scott and Betty Boop in the Timaru Nursery Stakes. Lord Brent ran a second to Clive Brook at Omoto last season over a mile and a at Omoto last season, but has been a. disappointment since. Lady Carol ran three second and a third and a fourth last season, going 2.48 1-5 for a mile and a quarter and 3.26 4-5 for a mile and a half. Royal Surprise won at Cheviot last season over a mile and a ) three thirds. He has shown stamina, ' and his best performance over a mile was a third to Wainoni Girl and Sunworth at Riccarton in May in 2.47 1-5 for a mile and a-quarter. Guy Whispers won oyer a mile and a quarter at a. Manawatu meeting last season m 2.55 3-5 off 3.5, beating Three . Tens (this year’s Challenge Stakes winner) and Labour Day into the places. Gold Bar, Lord Bretft, Lady Carol, Royal Surprise, and Guy Whsipers all have chances, and though some of the maidens engaged may surprise, form suggests Guy Whispers, Royal Surpiise ■and Lady Carol. 12.55 PETRIE HANDICAP, of £llO. Peter Harvesters third to Milestone and Lady Ede m ?, 49 1-5 for 12J furlongs, and Judgment’s third to Milestone and CoD’rector at Methven on the same day in 3 45 3-5 make them the pick of the field as far as form is concerned. Peter Harvester also has o.di _-t> against his name for a second to Paddy’s Harvest at Kaikoura last season. Fire King has the speed and stamina to win this race if he could oe depended upon to trot steadily. _ Zealand ran third in a classic at Timaru last season, but the placing was not m much account. Highrate has been working splendidly at Victoria, Pain, and is a place proposition. Moira Bingen, now in L. F. Berkett s sta e, wod a race easily at Thames last season in 3 41 2-5, but was unplaced seven times later. She may have improved in charge of Berkett, who has done well will sciuare gaiters. The popular fancies 'mW be Veter Hm-.'ester, .lullsment and Highrate. 1.35 THGGERS’ HANDICAP (in saddle), of £l3o' 2.22 rate. Eight furlongs and a-half.

Chameleon, a most consistent pacer, Labour Day, a promising Donald entrant, Lady Carol, a consistent performer last season, and the American-bred Mackscot make most appeal of those, off the front, with preference for Mackscot, who won all the way at his last start, over 121 furlongs at Wellington. Petite is a speedy pacer at her best, and Shadow Boy, who will be having his first race of the season, is a great beginner, and a previous winner on the course. Wainoni Girl is reputed to be a four-year-old of great promise. Sho was unlucky at Methven, but beat a good field at Riccarton towards the close of last season, and was a good third to Accountant and Shadow Queen at Washdyke last week. King’s Jubilee has yet to live up to his early promise, but age does a lot for the progeny of Jack Potts. Baron Silk, Replica (who will be remembered for a big place dividend on this track) are smart. Atarau Queen is now trained at Addington. .Carageen has no recent form. It looks like Wainoni Girl, Macksot, and Shadow Boy. 3.0 MAWHERA HANDICAP, of £220; 3.32 rate. Twelve furlongs and a-half.

Devotion .. . • ser Purina . . ■ Eastern Prince scr Royal Grattan .. 12 Lady Milne .. scr Shadow Son .. 12 Super Jack .. scr Stylish Boy .. 24 Colonel Axworthy 12 Ivy Peterson .. 36 The principal event of the day has drawn a fine field of ten improving pacers, with prospects of a fine race, and well balanced speculation. Lady Milne has the best form of those on the front mark, and as she has proved her ability over the distance, she will carry a lot of support if reserved for this event. Devotion has no form since joining J. Pringle’s stable, and Eastern Prince is not improving with age. Super Jack is a young pacer of great promise, and will be having his second race from the stable of R. JHumphreys. ' At his test, lie has theability to win this race. Purina is a proved stayer, and a consistent performer. Colonel Axworthy has done nothing in two starts this season, but he won two races last season, and ran into seven minor places, in addition to four fourths. The best has yet to be seen of this good looking horse. Shadow Son was a useful class three-year-old, winning the New Brighton Challenge Stakes, and though he was beaten in the Great Northern Derby, he is rated as an early improver. Royal Grattan won only one race last season., and that at Greymouth at the corresponding meeting, on a very heavy track. He has. no recent form as • a recommendation. Stylish Boy won two races last season, one of them at Greymouth, and at the recent New Brighton meeting recorded 3.19 1-5 for a mile and a-half in running third to Great Don and Regal. He will be in demand. Ivy Peterson has had six starts this season,, without making a return, and won only one race last season. She has been unplaced in her last starts, so she has no form to warrant suppoit. Lady Milne will he one of the elect ,if started, and in her absence, form points to Stylish Boy, Shadow Son and Colonel Axworthy.

3.40 ROYAL OAK HANDICAP, of £llO. Unhoppled trotters; 3.49 rate. Twelve furlongs and a-half. M Loyal Star .. scr Highrate .. 48 Pegasus Bay . . ser Moira Bingen .. as Sealand .. . • ser All the unhoppled trotters in the Royal Oak Handicap have been reviewed above in the Petrie Handicap, in which all are engaged. The longer journey will probably have a bearing on the chances of some, and form in the Petrie Handicap should be the best guide for the public. With due reservations in view of earlier running, good prospects must be held by Judgment, Peter Harvester and Moira Bingen. 4.20 ADVANCE HANDICAP, of £105; . 3.5 rate. Ten furlongs and a-half. Dick Travis .. scr Spey Royal ■■ scr Inquisition .. scr Wainoni .lack .. sei Johnnie's Hope scr William •• sm Lord Brent .. scr Lady Carol .. - Nelson McFarlane scr Royal Surprise -i Sailor’s Hornpipe scr William and Wainoni Jack will be fresh horses in the Advance .Handicap of 11 runners. William is a well-bred gelding, who showed promise as a two-year-old, when he was confidently supported in each of his two starts, but he lias not raced since, and is now a six-year-old. Wainoni Jack has had two racos tins season, and was not prominent in either. The distance will suit Royal Surprise bettei than the first race, and though earlier racing may provide a better guide, the I best fancied are Royal Surprise, Lady Carol and Lord Brent. 5.0 DASH HANDICAP, of £135; 2.58 rate. Ten furlongs and a-half. Atarau Queen ■■ ser Shadow Boy .. scr Baron Silk .. ser Wainoni Girl .. scr Carageen .. ..scr Axspear.. .. - Elite Rey .. ■ ■ ser Frisco Silk . . - King's Jubilee ..scr Loyalettc •• - ; Bittle Derby ..scr Pamelas .. 1Keplica •• scr Lady Milne . • -1 ’ Kollalong • • ser ) Axspear, tho only horse in the Dash Handicap not previously' accepted for.

has )iad three starts this season for a win and two thirds, and he is likely to carry heavy support. Wainoni Girl should be prominent all the way, and tlio Shadow Boy-Rollalong bracket, with Shadow Boy such a good beginner, is sure to merit some confidence. Loyalette is another who cannot be discarded, while the back-marker, Lady Milne, provided she is not hampered by a close running iield over the sprint journey, is certain to be prominent. Scratchings will probably reduce the size of the field, and the earlier races in which all, excent Axspear, have been paid up for, should enable the public to sort out the chances. Axspear, Wainoni Girl, and Lady Milne will be among the favoured division.

AUCKLAND TROTS. PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW Large fields will parade at Epsom to-morrow, when the Auckland rioting Club’s Spring meeting will open. NOTES ON THE RACING. [SPECIAL TO “STAB,”] WELLINGTON, October 19. Peter Beckford led throughout the Glen Hurdles. Esperance Bay essayed to go with him but was out-jumped at each fence. Clarion Call man up to Peter Beckford at the last fence but, although, making a game attempt to get up. Peter Beckford had no trouble in holding him off. Esperance Bay was a fair third clear of Donegal with Aussie Ra, Ruaform and Jewish Lad in line next. Peter Beckford has only had three races over hurdles ami has won. them all. He pulled up very lame after this race, and is a doubtful proposition to carry on at the game. A Smart Juvenile:

Cetewayo by Phaleron Bay, having his first start, easily won the Taita Handicap for two-year-olds. He followed Flying Spy into the straight with Black Robe and Khurja next, and taking charge a furlong from the post, ran home an easy winner from Black Robe, who finished strongly, well clear of Flying Spy and Khurja with Lochrian and Wild Fox next. A Decisive Win: Old Bill was responsible for an attractive performance to win the Wainui Handicap. He followed a bunch turning for home and taking advantage of a run through on the fence, soon gained the front and was not under pressure to win from Mishna, who finished solidly to beat Old Surrey.Haughty Winner vzas close up next in front of Royal Star 11, Boomerang. Beaupartir and Arctic King. Winning Rival was in third place turning into the straight, but was one of the first of the leaders to he in trouble. Haughty Winner gave the leaders a good break at the straight entrance and was within reach of the leaders inside the distance, but could not improve his position. A Close Struggle; 'ln a blanket finish in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap, four horses passed the post practically in line. Harina was in front after passing the distance and Grey Night, Sleeveless and Sternchase . challenged approaching the post. Sleeveless on the outside got up in the last stride to beat Grey Night with Sternchase just beating Harina, half heads only separating them. Gay Gipsy and Lady Tinkle were Sleeveless, bred at Ashburton, won his last race as a two-year-old and has won his four races this season. Grey Night was kept in behind the leaders until a furlong from home and stayed on much more solidly than in his race at Geraldine. The short-priced favourite Kahui did not flatter his supporters at any stage.

Lady Furst’s Handicap: Lady' Furst won the Wellington Handicap from end to end. She had a three-lengths’ lead for practically the whole journey and had that margin at the post. In an interesting tussle for. second honours. Tooley Street, who was one of the rear division for over three parts of the journey, executed an outstanding performance to get up in the last few strides to beat the favourite Centrepoise, with Yours Truly half a length away. There was then another gap to Lowenberg and Dictate, with Might and Sly Fox next. Rabble, ridden by the stable apprentice, was in a prominent position early in the run home, but did not last long. He may do better later at the meeting with a stronger rider up. The Juvenile Classic:

Miss Hallomet was first out and first on to the course proper in the Wellesley Stakes, but with a furlong to go. Enrich made a fast run on the fence and soon placed the issue beyond doubt, winning easily' from Miss Hallomet, who held on to beat the fast-finishing Ringcraft by half a head. Bean Coureur, Indore, Absolve and Taitama. followed. Absolve was knocked back at the start and was hopelessly out of the contest. Enrich is by' Safari from Sight Draft, and was sold at the dispersal sale of the late Mr, AV. Higgins' horses for 225 guineas. A Mild Surprise:

Disdain was supported down to a very' short price in the Shorts Handicap. but although she got away fairly well, she was not prominent at any stage and finished five lengths away from the winner. Density endeavoured to win from end to end. and when she was clear of Baran and Submission a furlong from home, her prospects looked bright, but she then

weakened and Baran ran past her. Baran appeared to have the race in hand, until Mittie flashed up on the outside and after a short struggle, the

latter had Baran beaten to win going away. Density stopped badly but held on for third from Submission, with Disdain and. Blonde Princess together next. Handed Away:

The final stages of the October Handicap were confined to Raeburn and Classform. The former led into the straight and just as he held off Red Chief, Classform came with a late run and had Raeburn beaten hut Classform’s rider eased up too soon, and Raeburn with a renewed effort, snatched victory on the post. Red Chief was a fair third in front of Indian Sun and Colonel Bogey. GISBORNE RACES. HANDICAP TO DE FRIEND. GISBORNE, October 19. The first day of the- Poverty Bay Turf Club’s Spring meeting was held at the Makaraka course to-day in sunny weather. There was a fair attendance and the track was in good order. The totalisator handled £4308 10/-, against £4940 for the- corresponding day last year, a decrease of £632 10/-. Remaining results: — Makaraka Handicap, one mile: 1 De Friend 8.12 (E.
