AUSTRALIAN WAR CABINET

SITTING IN MELBOURNE. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] MELBOURNE, October 19. Mr. Menzies, Prime Minister, said that the War Cabinet would have to remain sitting in Melbourne in the midst of the war organisational activities, despite complaints as to Canberra being the proper centre. If the Defence Department had wholly been based on Canberra before the war it would have been feasible for the War Cabinet to sit there, but as things were it was- not. Sir Henry Gullett said to-day that while Britain was directly and Australia indirectly threatened, it might yet happen that Australia would be threatened directly. Nobody could foresee what this Avar would bring forth. It was going to be for the British their greatest ordeal in centuries.

He referred to the need for the activities of the department controlling the publication of information. There would be no suppression of essential or vital facts, but there was need lor .the exercise of regulation.
