P.O. SAVINGS BANK. Slight increases in both deposits and withdrawals are levealed by the August returns of the Post Office Savings Bank. Deposits amounted to £2,269,878, an increase of £183,534 (8.8 per cent ) compared with July. Withdrawals totalled £2,575,813, an increase of £142,969 (5.9 per cent.) above the July figure. Au excess of withdrawals over deposits therefore continues, the August figure being £305,940. For the five months from March 31. 1939, withdrawals exceeded deposits by £3,049,443. In the five months of the previous year, there was an excess of deposits of £802,431. Withdrawals trim trustee savings banks in the five months from March 31, 1939, exceeded deposits by £208,592. Deposits with these banks in the corresponding five months of the previous year exceeded withdrawals £197,946."

The Grey River return to October 17 was 2330 z from 94,888 yards dredged in 132 hours. ALEXANDER. The Alexander mine report for the week ended October 12 is as follows: No. 6 Level-North rise: Average Width of ore in rise 30 feet above the level is 12 inches, the north end of the rise showing the greatest width of 18 inches. Have widened out at top of the rise for intermediate level. Reef here has widened to Ift 9in south end, standing vertical, and lying horizontal in the north end. Stoping continues on ore south of rise and above No. 6 level. Average width three feet. Stopes—Above No. 5 intermediate level two faces are being worked north on winze. Filling-in operations in progress, which is mainly responsible for a small output for week, only 40 tons of ore being sent to the battery.
