TODAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME. October 21 —Poverty Bay. October 21, 23—Wellington. October 21, 23—Gore. October 23—Poverty Bay Hunt. October 23—Waverley. October 23—North Canterbury. October 23 —Waikato Hunt. October 28—Banks Peninsula. October 28 —Rangitikei. Lapidarian: When Lapidarian paid close on a century at Ellerslie he was making his first appearance as a hurdler, and he led practically throughout. Waverley Prospect: Pretty Lass, who went under to that smart hack Sleeveless at Marton, will not have such formidable opposition at Waverley. and can be ticked aff as a likely winner. She could have improved on her Slt-sec for hall a mile at Hawera last Saturday if ridden out. Veldette: Whatever Veldette’s mission at Waverley she is certain of considerable Hawera support, as she is doing splendidly (says a Hawera writer). She is a three-year-old by Vaals—Golden Rod, and won one race in five starts last season. Last Chance: The Gore meeting will give Master Dingle his last opportunity as a hack, and in future he will have to do his racing in open company. Last season Master Dingle won £495 in first money, and his win in the Clarendon Handicap at Dunedin brought his total up to £615. Vai Lu: A mile in 1.37 2-5 and credited with a comfortable win at Auckland marks Vai Lu as one out of the ordinary. He is a four-year-old gelding by King Lu from Valress, a mare not in the Stud Book, and a fact suggesting a lack of control in connection with racing in New Zealand, because horses only partially identified should not be allowed to race (says “Sentinel"). Welcome Stakes Winner:

Queen City, winner of the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, is a brown filly by Iliad from Queen March, so she is related to a great racing family. She is a half-sister to King March, Limarch and Birthday Boy. Queen March herself won the Welcome Stakes in 1922. Queen City is trained for her owners, Hon. E. R. Davis and Mr. O. Nicholson,-by T. F. Verner, at Takanini. FTl*3ck • They were travelling fast or the going at Ellerslie on the second day was unusually fast, according to the times recorded. Bronwen won the Epsom Handicap in 1.12, and the record for the Railway Handicap is held Gay Blonde at 1.11 3-5, with Stretto next best at 1.12. Sunola won in 1.25 2-5. Under 12.10, Erination cut out two miles over hurdles in 3.44 3-5, recalling that Record Reign, 12.12, once established a record of 3.46 4-5, which stood from 1900 to 1907. Speed was- the order of the day. Maiden in Stewards.

A high opinion is held of Gay Lancer, and there appears good reason for it. He is still a novice and has been entered for the Stewards’ Handicap, but at this stage he appears rather flattered. At Wingatui last meeting he was a good third to Islay Downs and Janefield, but with a better run in the middle stage he might have made matters more interesting. Gay Lancer is a good type of three-year-old by Irish Lancer from the Woodend mare Linwood, who was out of the imported mare Sabor, the dam of Crubenmore, Enwood, Gorban, and Jedburgh. Gay Lancer was bred by Mr. A. Chisholm, who sold him to his present owner, Mr. A.'H. -Fisher.

Victory Thrown Away: Over-confident riding cost Le Toquet, rehandicapped 61b. a double victory for the day in the Farewell Handicap at Masterton. With Sigurd settled shortly after entering the straight. L. Baker allowed Le Toquet to run along on the bit, and it was not till Hasten came up on his outer that he realised he was in danger. Hasten, who was in full acceleration, had forced his head in front 50 yards off the pest, and a desperate bid by Baker to retrieve the situation just failed. Hasten, still a maiden prior to the race, had previously shown plenty of | pace, but he has been a nervous horse at the barrier and twice early in the season took no part in racecs. Ht is a three-year-old gelding by Colossus from the Cape Horn Arbitiation mare Miss Hastings, a useful horse in her day, and he is- owned by his. breeder, Mr. J. Mulvaney, of Feilding.

Cheery Jack compensated his Sydney connections for his unlucky run at Melbourne by outclassing the field in the hurdles. Glenlonan and Dark David ran good races, but Cape Race was disappointing. Warbird finished stoutly in the first division of the Nursery Handicap to beat Applause in the last few strides. Sir Richard was a promising third. Wanganui went a fair race. Securities, trained by the veteran, James Scobie, led throughout the second division. Strand, by Bulandshar, was a good third. A muddling pace spoilt the Caulfield Stakes. The pace was on over only the last half-mile, which was run in 47gsec. Landlaw surprised by finishing second, and enhanced his Caulfield Cub prospects. Reading ran a fair race. Metropolitan Nov. 23, 25—Forbury Park. Alf Parrish: Alf Parrish, engaged in the unhoppled trotters events at Victoria Park on Saturday and Monday, is.an eleven-year-old gelding by Guy Fairish—Romantic. He is a quick beginner, and though not a good stayer, may be prominent for a long way at Victoria Park. New Zealand Bred: At Gloucester Park, Forth, on October 7, the former New Zealand trottei. Great Admiral won the Trayning Handicap. Mountain Flight, by RhicMountain King*—Manna, won tn 6 Kunuoppen Handicap, and Kay Francis the Araluen Handicap. On Septemb.ei 30, the LS-year-old Dillon Huon registered his fourteenth victory in Western Australia, when he won the Silas Handicap from 60 yards behind. Both Placed: Peter Harvester, owned by Mr. H. I Stafford, the owner of Pot Luck, was third behind Milestone and Lady Ede at Methven, and Judgment, was third behind Milestone and Co-Director in a siniilar"cla.ss race on the same day at Methven. Both Judgment and Peter Harvester are engaged at Victoria. Park on Saturday.

Sealand: 1 The four-year-old Sealand, trained Hjy I). Bennett at Templeton, showed - promise last season, running a third :-in his only three starts. The third .placing was behind Invigorator (who won by 100 yards) and Ocean Belle in

the New Zealand Trotting Slakes at Timaru. He is bred to trot fast, and his showings at Greymouth will be watched with interest.

Royal Surprise: Royal Surprise, who is engaged at Greymouth, is regarded as one of the best novices at Addington, according to a Christchurch writer. He has placings behind some good horses to his credit, and has shown considerable promise as a stayer!* He is a five-year-old by Grattan Loyal—a Happy Voyage mare, and is trained by V. Alborn.

Brilliant Speed: Fire King, a beautifully bred gelding by Native King from Waitaki Girl, is owned by V. Alborn, who has spent a lot of time and money in endeavouring to induce the black gelding to trot, steadily. He has brilliant speed and stays well, as is only to he expected in a horse with such fashionable blood lines, but he has so far been too erratic to merit confident support. Grey mouth-owned:

Guy Whispers, engaged in the slowclass pacers’ races at the Greymouth meeting, is a five-year-old gelding by Real Guy from a. Woodland Whispers mare, and is owned by Mr. T. Deere, of Greymouth. The gelding is trained by C. K. Yeatman at Hornby. Last season he won only one race, but in that he showed his quality in disposing of Three Tens and Labour Day. Three Tens has developed this season, and at New Brighton won the Challenge Stakes. This gives Guy Whispers a chance on Saturday.
