GREY POWER BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. —- /— 1 1 The monthly meeting of the Grey t Electric Power Board was held last £ evening, and was attended by Messrs j J B Kent (chairman), J. Mulcare, A. - M Carroll, J. Unwin, J. Smeaton, A. t H. McKane, W. H. Parfitt, W„ Fisher, t W Clayton, the Engineer (Mr Sinclair ] Trotter) and [he Secretary (Mr W. S. ] McClymont). . The hon. secretary (Mr Av. M eir) ot j the Mawhera Boys’ and Girls’ Agri- < cultural Club, wrote explaining the i newly-formed club’s aims and objects, 1 and inviting the Board to appoint a ; representative to attend the next ex- ; ecutive meeting. . It was decided that the Chaii man , represent the Board. . ; The hon. secretary of the Westland ; Provincial Council, New Zealand Centennial, wrote explaining the steps to be taken to obtain the Government subsidy on., all donations to approved Centennial objects. The secretary of the Makogai Lepei Fund wrote thanking the Board for a donation of , The Secretary of the Power Boards I Union of Employers wrote forwarding the report for the year ended August 31, 1939, the report of the agent regarding awards, and the annual accounts. . Mt McKane said that, as a member cf the Executive, he was of the opinion that the Board should withdraw from the Union, as it had failed to justify its existence, by not. bringing about a Dominion award’. The Board s fee was .£6 a year. On the motion of Messrs Mulcare | and Unwin, it was decided to withdraw from the Union. Messrs Mallinson Bros, wrote asking for compensation, owing to water backed up from the Kaimata dam having allegedly caused flooding on their land. The letter suggested that the land should be surveyed, with a four foot allowance for flooding, and that the Board' should make an inspection. The Secretary said that when the matter had cropped up before, in November, 1935, the Chairman and Engineer had been authorised to offer up to £250, but it had never been paid. Waiuta: The Secretary reported that several Waiuta residents had at different times raised the question of having a collector appointed, and had stressed the convenience that it would be to the inhabitants of the village. He detailed steps taken to ascertain a suitable man, and asked the opinion of members regarding Mr H. A. Ord, who was in charge of the Blackwater Mines office at Waiuta. The selection was approved, on the motion of Mr Clayton, seconded by Mr Carroll, as from 1/11/39. The Secretary reported, having invited suggestions as to a location for the Boards staff picnic, and it was generally agreed that February would be the best month in which to hold the function. The matter of arranging suitable window decorations for the Board’s offices on the occasion of the Centennial, was left to the Secretary, he engaging to keep within a limit 01. £4 to £5.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. i The Engineer reported as follows t for the period, September 16 to Octo- 1 her 17, inclusive: —Power Supply: For the second quarter ending September, J 30, the units purchased were 5,681,000, J with a maximum demand of 4188,' K.V.A. The northern sub-station of|, the F.W.D. is now functioning norm- , ' ally, the permanent switchgear having 1 been installed and the cables laid to give separate supply to the Board's high tension feeders from that point i to Waiuta, and as far in the south as | J Ahaura. Generally, the power demand I has been well maintained, the figures i for the. quarter just ended being 62 K.V.A. under the original estimate for this period. Reticulation: The out- j side staff have been engaged on general maintenance of low tension lines in Runanga, Blackball and Grey- ' mouth, and connecting new consumers. A transformer on the Rewanui line has been replaced by one, of larger capacity to give supply to-, the colliery of Spark and Party, who] are now taking power from the Board.] A short interruption to supply on the high, tension feeder supplying South Greymouth and district to Camerons, took place on Saturday lust, due to bush fires setting a pole on lire which caused the guard hook to foul the high tension line.
