NAZI CONFERENCES

SEEKING WAY TO PEACE. [BY cable— press assn.—copyright.] LONDON, October 16. The German Government is still at a loss about how to get peace at its own terms, and Herr Hitler is still holding repeated conferences. To-day he presided at a military conference attended by key men in the defence forces. An unconfirmed report from Berlin says that Herr Hitler sent a special courier to M. Stalin during the weekend. M. Stalin’s answer will have an important bearing on German plans. .While waiting, the Nazi leaders are inventing more “success” stories to keep up their courage. The latest is that H.M.S. Repulse was torpedoed at the same time as the Royal Oak. This story .is as completely without foundation as the Ark Royal story. The German claim was that the attacker of the Royal Oak also attacked and badly damaged the Repulse. A joint communique issued by the Admiralty, the Air Ministry, and the Ministry of Home Security said that the German claim was an absurd invention. In view of the habit of the German wireless of making fantastic claims, it must again be repeated that neither the Repulse nor any other British warship has been damaged by hostile attack except as mentioned in the statements of the Admiralty. The Rome radio quotes a German official spokesman as saying that Herr Hitler does not intend to make any new peace move. Further political action could only come from London, or Paris.
