APPEAL BY CHIEF JUSTICE. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HAMILTON, October 17. In his charge to the grand jury in the Supreme Court at Hamilton today the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Mvers) appealed to every citizen, as a 'duty, to assist the State in these difficult times. “Everyone should lead a decent lite, that is, free from crime,” he _ said. “Every occupant of His Majesty s prison is a liability on the State, and it is our duty to help suppress crime. Ho had impressed upon members 01 the legal profession the necessity for assisting the public economy, which applied throughout. New Zealand. He hoped there would be no delay between the hearing of civil cases, and that solicitors would be ready to proceed with a case immediately the previous one had been concluded. He desired that cases should not be settled at the last moment: but that if settlements were possible that they should he made earlier. Every day the Court sat there were in attendance about fiO men called for the common jury. It meant a charge on the State of about £lO a day if they wen brought to Court unnecessarily. It might, well moan a considerable Itw-s of money to the State.
