GREY SURF CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD. At the annual meeting of the Greymouth Surf Life Saving Club, Mr J. B Kent, (president) presided over a good attendance of members. The President’s annual report was as follows; —“Weather conditions during the past season were most unfavourable, thus restricting the activities Of the club, little bathing being indulged in by the general public. However, the beach was kept safe during the season, one save being effected by Mr Affleck A number of our good members have* left the district, and others have gone into camp, including our secretary. In this connection, it is good to record, that, we have now several juniors, who show much promise, thanks to the efforts of Messrs Harrington and Smith, anit the good name of the club will be worthily upheld by those keen youths. In competitions, the club’ won the West Coast Championship (six men), also the Two Men Championship. The Dewar Reel was won by “Taylor’s Mistake,’’ your club securing third place, and runners-up in the marchpast for the John Burns Cup. In the junior rescue event, J. Mundy won the Barr Cup, a. most creditable effort for one so young. During the season, the club journeyed to Westport, in an endeavour to enliven interest in lifesaving work there, and ran our twomen rescue competition for the Smith men rescue competition for the SinithLawry Shield, which was won by Messrs Glen and Harrington. Through bad organisation this effort was not the success it should have been. We would advise that, in future, no local club events be competed for on other beaches. AVe wish to -tender the sincere thanks of the club to Messrs Cain and Beckman for providing the transport for the Westport trip. ‘We have also to thank Mr Fielding lor arranging classes for instruction in rescues, to enable members to sit for examination. It is unfortunate that this class was not taken advantage of to a greater extent. The reels and lines have been well cared for during the Winter by our custodian, Mr Smith, and are in good working order for the coining season. In conclusion, we Would like to thank all those who have assisted us during the season, also the Press and local bodies for their generous support, which wc will endeavour to continue to deserve.
