Prominence is given in Melbourne to-a report by Mr. Casey (Commonwealth Treasurer), who declared that, by the end of the year, 21 armament i “annexes” will be operating in Austra-I lia, and that.the output of planes will! soon be great enough to equip a com-; plete squadron every three weeks. i It is stated: “Australia will become i an Empire arsenal,, practically inde-i pendent of outside sources for arms! and munitions, and raw materials for i making them.”
HEAVY EXPENDITURE SYDNEY, October 17. The Minister for Supply and Development (Mr. Casey) in a broadcast address, said that the War Cabinet had approved of a capital expenditure of some millions, for the extension of munition manufacture. Australia’s shell production was to be doubled, and the delivery of Wirraway planes will be expedited, so that soon a complete squadron would be equipped with new aircraft every three weeks. A Melbourne message stated that the expansion of all arms of the fighting services was considered by the War Cabinet, but Mr. Menzies said that the Government’s decisions could not be announced yet.
