BRITISH COAL INDUSTRY

HIGHER OUTPUT PLANNED [BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.] RUGBY, October 13. The British coal industry is planning to increase its output by about 300,000,000 tons a year. Much of the extra coal will be used to meet the increasing demands of the export market. Bigger supplies are required by France and large orders are expected from Italy as a result of the negotiations now being actively pursued with the Italian Government. The terms of the Anglo-Polish agreement are now at an end because the Polish mines are in Germany’s possession. The valuable Scandinavian market was divided almost equally between Britain and Poland. British exporters hope not only to retain their share of this market, but to increase it. Proposals by which Britain s coal production can be largely expanded are being submitted to the Government by the coal owners and coal miners’ organisations. Home industries will also want more coal than formerly now that they and other factories engaged in the country’s war effort are coming into maximum production.
